Gelsey's Ballet Costumes Endangered!
Donation protected
Help protect and preserve historic costumes formally of the New York City Opera (NYCO)!

About Our Project:
The Gelsey Kirkland Ballet (GKB) is a small ballet company located in lower Manhattan, directed by the world-renowned ballerina Gelsey Kirkland and her husband Michael Chernov. After a water main break on Broadway, our basement flooded causing us to close for several days, while also damaging many of our costumes. We need your help to preserve these historic costumes. The funds raised from this project will support the major undertaking of shipping, restoring and storing these costumes in climate controlled spaces to prevent any future disasters. Your support will also allow us to tag each costume and create an online database so these beautiful costumes can continue to be shared with the entire arts community.

About Our Costumes:
In 2013, the New York City Opera was forced to auction off virtually their entire inventory of costumes, sets, and props. Gelsey Kirkland Ballet purchased 12 tractor trailers of these priceless treasures, wanting to ensure that these historic items not be lost. Along with the costumes purchased from the former New York City Opera, GKB has been fortunate enough to acquire costumes that have graced the grandest stages, including the Metropolitan Opera House and the Royal Opera House, as well as costumes that were created by designers such as the legendary Barbara Karinska.

Thankfully when our basement was flooded, most of our costumes did not experience permanent damage. We have been able to dry out the wet costumes and move them to a safer location, but more still needs to be done. With your support these costumes can be repaired and used countless more times. As a 501(C)(3) organization, any donation will be tax deductible. We thank you for your help, not only for allowing local art to thrive, but also in preserving America's rich artistic heritage as well.
