Please assist our dear Maryann with medical costs for her cancer treatment. She and her husband, Choky, are currently in West Virginia, where Maryann was helicoptered for life-saving care. She had initially traveled from California to Florida, and while there, she felt ill and was taken to the emergency room. After undergoing multiple tests, Maryann was then diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma of the spine—a very rare and aggressive cancer that has left her debilitated and in a very serious medical condition.

The growth in her spine (later diagnosed as cancer) was initially removed to save her left leg from complete paralysis. After months of treatment and therapy, her condition improved to the point that she felt well enough to travel from Florida by car to visit family in New York. En route, she fell very ill yet again. Her husband, Choky, immediately took her to the closest emergency room, but it was a local hospital and it did not have the proper facilities to treat her.

At that point, her condition had rapidly deteriorated to critical. As result, she was sent via helicopter to a larger hospital—West Virginia Medical Center. There, she was intubated and placed in a medically induced coma so the doctors could save her. Thankfully and miraculously, after several days, her condition improved and stabilized.

However, after another round of imaging tests, the doctors discovered that the tumor had returned to the exact same spot on her spine. As such, the doctors had to perform surgery yet again to remove the resurfaced tumor. She is currently receiving treatment there.

Choky, who had immediately flown to Florida from California when she was first hospitalized, has used up all his family leave for work. Additionally, they have quickly depleted their savings with both being unable to work. Also, since they cannot yet travel back to California due to her fragile condition, her California insurance (now through COBRA) is not covering outpatient treatment. She is 63 years old and not yet eligible for Medicare (though we are currently working to find an exception).
