At the age of 29 Emma was diagnosed with a rare from of Leukaemia in late December 2023. On Friday 25th November 2024 she had finaly finished her treatment after having a stem cell transplant and was so excited to return home to her family to continue her recovery. Whilst leaving the hospital ward she rang the bell to confirm she was cancer free and her treatment had ended ❤️

During this time she had picked up a chest infection in hospital which delayed her from coming home earlier. When she was finally released and came home to her mum and dad they had a great weekend together watching films and cuddling her dog Odin while chatting about taking a holiday once she was feeling fully restored.

Unfortunately, Emma’s chest infection began to reappear and by the Tuesday it was significantly worse. She had an outpatient appointment that day, but packed a bag as she feared she would be readmitted to ward 27 at the Christie.

Things didn’t improve and she was transferred to the Critical Care Unit on Thursday evening.

Her mum and dad travelled from kendal to the Christie on Friday afternoon. She was very tired and not breathing very well even with an oxygen mask. Her oxygen levels were low and her carbon dioxide and potassium level too high.

They decide they would heavily sedate her and give her a muscle relaxant, so they could ventilate her. The doctors said there was a high chance that she wouldn't survive and that they would not consider doing CPR if her heart failed as it would be too destressing for Emma and unlikely to work.

One of the nurses looking after Emma explained that she had been fiddling with equipment to try and help her. Her oxygen was increased to 100% which helped lower the carbon dioxide in her blood. They also found a way of reducing her potassium levels from a glucose mix added to the ventilator.

Saturday morning came and a different doctor called to say she was deteriorating and that there will become a time soon when they have to consider turning off the ventilator. Both Mark and Dianne were feeling very bemused to make any sense of the mixed messages they had received with each encounter either first hand or over the phone. Both Emma and her parents believed that after her body had rested with the sedation and antibiotics that she would be brought back around to continue her recovery.

Emma passed away peacefully with her Mum and Dad by her side. Although she had beat the Leukemia with a successful stem cell transplant, it left her vulnerable to any infection as it wiped out her immune system. She has been incredibly brave and shown tremendous strength, but her lungs couldn't recover from the pneumonia and pleurisy.
Emma wasn't just a beautiful young lady she was very intelligent to and could overcome anything when she put her mind to it. She also had the most wonderful sense of humour and a loving, generous heart. She was one of lifes givers. Words can never express the loss we all feel.
