Hi everyone, this is my roommate’s dog, Piper!
She’s a 13-year-old, distinguished lady with a real knack for food thievery and a special penchant for making her owner panic. As you can see from her picture, even with her old, worn joints, she will throw it down just for a couple belly rubs, and then proceed to convince you with her adorable eyes to stay and give her more attention. She’s certifiably the cutest baby girl - so cute that she has a whole community of people who love and know her. Suffice to say, her cult steadily grows in followers every single day, especially because she’s always in and out of the hospital, which brings us to the reason behind this gofundme.
Just this year, in January of 2025, my roommate came home to Piper having a very frightening collapse episode that lasted for the entire weekend. A few months later, she started to present with what looked like mini strokes - collapsing suddenly in the house, or in the middle of the staircase during one instance. Only then did we find out that she had severe pulmonary hypertension that was causing her to throw clots in her brain. Despite the long list of problems that she has, she’ll also throw in random hunger strikes (just for fun).
By now, we have run a whole gamut of diagnostics on the poor girl, who also had to spend field days in every specialty department including neuro, cardio, internal medicine, emergency, and so on. However, despite the countless number of second opinions we have received, we’re all still scratching our heads at the end of the day because nothing truly points to a direct answer of the underlying disease that is causing all of these signs.
Although Piper is stable for now, she’s had yet another collapse episode (this time, seizures) just this past weekend. This entire year has been a massive rollercoaster for my roommate, a current clinical year student at Tufts vet. As if the emotional burden of Piper’s critical condition wasn’t enough, with every additional medical bill, my roommate has had to pick up more work shifts at her job despite having many >40-hour weeks of unpaid clinics and coming home with neither the time or emotional bandwidth to spare - just her undying love and commitment for her ride-or-die.
That’s not to say she doesn’t take care of Piper well. She’s THE most dedicated owner I have ever met, taking her on long walks after clinics and buying any food off the shelf to get her to eat (my roommate is a vegetarian who learned to cook real meat just for her dog…). However, even during moments of improvement, her friends and I have seen how much the question of Piper’s quality of life eats away at all aspects of her life.
Even if you never had the privilege of growing up with a childhood pet or having a pet at all, you can still understand how devastating it is to make critical health decisions for your 13-year old soulmate. She truly means the world to her.
Please consider donating and helping my roommate out with Piper’s medical bills. Even if you don’t have the funds to spare, even a message that Piper is in your thoughts would do wonders in lifting her spirits.
Thank you all so, so much in advance for your donations and kind words, and a very special thanks to Ally Kim for working with me to get this running!!!
