For those who know Josh and Laura Gabbert, you know that they are two of the most kind, giving, and big-hearted people in our Bardstown/ Nelson County community. As employees of Bardstown City Schools, they have both dedicated their professional lives to the service of others. Laura works as a special education teacher at Bardstown Primary School. Josh works as a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) for Bardstown City Schools, providing mental health therapy and counseling to students with and without disabilities. They truly live a life of service and dedication to others.
Approximately five years ago, the family was caught off guard by Josh’s diagnosis of a very rare form of appendix cancer. To treat his cancer, Josh underwent a very grueling and time-consuming surgery to remove the tumors that were found all throughout his abdominal cavity. After removal of the tumors via hand by the physician, Josh then underwent a relatively new form of chemotherapy called hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, or HIPEC, for short. The procedure calls for hot chemotherapy to be pumped into the belly to take care of any remaining cancer that is left after hand removal.
Unfortunately, a few years later Josh’s cancer came back. Which meant another surgery and another round of HIPEC and subsequent chemotherapies soon after. In between surgery and recovery, both Laura and Josh were still working. Laura never really stopped, and Josh anxiously awaited clearance to come back to work, but made sure, in the meantime, to touch base with both students and staff about needs that may have come up.
Now, two years after the second surgery, and with three young kids, Lucy, 4th grade, Calvin, 2nd grade, and Penelope, almost 2 years old, the Gabbert’s are finding themselves facing a third round with a cancer that won’t seem to give them a break. Josh is scheduled for his third surgery and 3rd HIPEC treatment in Cincinnati, OH., to take place in February.
With medical bills left from past surgeries and treatments, along with the financial challenges of trying to raise three kids in today’s world, the Gabbert’s could use a serious and generous showing of love and support at this time.
When the goal has been reached, I will set up withdrawals to my checking account and then write a check directly to the family to be deposited at their bank.
If you are able, please consider donating to help their family during these stressful times. They are some of the most faithful, positive, and genuinely good people that one could ever ask to meet. Let’s show them that our community and the Bardstown family is there for them.
