Ellie’s Medical Treatments
After a second vet visit, the doctors have given us, however small, a glimmer of hope. Originally Ellie was diagnosed with IMHA, a serious, often fatal autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys its own red blood cells, leading to severe anemia.
After giving some treatment she responded very well to the steroids and her red blood cell count was normal, but her white blood cells were high. She’s currently taking antibiotics to help alleviate that issue.
Where her story gets complicated is the presence of what seems to be a mass in her abdominal area. We aren’t certain whether it’s cancer, or how aggressive it is, and the second vet wasn’t even certain about the presence of a mass. We will know more info once she is given an ultrasound with a specialist.
What I do know in all of this is that I want to give Ellie a chance to live out her full life. She is only 7 and has always been full of life, love, and energy. Originally the vet implied her situation would likely be fatal, but a second opinion has given us some hope that it may not be as bad as it seems. Pet insurance won’t cover any pre-existing conditions which is what this situation is for Ellie, leaving me to pay out of my own pocket for her services, which in Colorado can be very expensive.
I regret not having pet insurance, but all I can do now is go forward and try to give her everything she deserves. I’ve always preferred to take care of things myself, but I’m asking for help from anyone who can that I might be able to cover more costs for Ellie and give her a fighting chance.
Thanks so much for reading, with love,
Haiden Isom
