Giving back to Grace Hospital

Hi my name is Amanda, and I’m fundraising for the Grace General Hospital.

For those who may not be aware, I became very ill on Tuesday and was admitted to the hospital for a short-term stay to manage my illness. Unfortunately, one of my symptoms includes severe abdominal pain, which requires essentially resetting my complete digestive system. No food, no liquids, nothing. I have been set up on 3 different IV lines, poked and prodded by needles various times per day over the last 5 days. It was 3-days in the emergency room before there was a bed available on one of the wards. They just renovated their emergency room, but it didn’t change the fact that many people were sitting in recliner chairs in the hallways for days on end.

That all said, I have had the absolute best experience considering the situation. I’m very appreciative of all of the hospital staff and volunteers. Not only for their patience with all the various types of people they treat on a regular daily basis but also for the fact that the system is still very broken and we lack so many nurses, doctors, healthcare aids, etc. The most astonishing thing about this is that my care was not impacted by all of these negative variables. Nurses being overworked, multiple calls on the intercom to see who would want to pick up longer hours, usually on their already 12-hour shifts, and so on.

This experience was truly eye-opening for me, and it will take time for the system to heal, having more people going back to the medical field and taking the time to educate themselves. We will get there one day, I have hope.

This is why I feel that the only way to best help with the current situation is to have the teams currently set up with the tools and resources they need for patient care.
