Chance's Surgery Fund

Please help Chance so that he will be able to keep walking.  He needs operations on both of his knees and eventually his hips. I have spent my entire saving for the x-rays, vet bills and medications totaling over $1,000 in the past few months.  The surgeries, medications and therapy he is in desperate need is estimated to cost an additional $8,000.

About Chance ... Chance came into my life at a difficult time.  I was having severe medical issues and finally was properly diagnosed with an incurable neurological disorder called Narcolepsy.  Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder whereby I experience excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep attacks.

My life had just been turned upside down. I had been struggling in college, work, and with my whole life.  I had just spent several weeks at my family home. In those weeks, I got my life back on track.  With the limitations I was going to face for the rest of my life, I could not follow the career path that I had worked so hard for but because my love of animals and the special connections I have always with them, I decided make a career change and go to grooming school.

I was ready to go back to my home in Wilmington.  The first thing I did was start to look for a companion.  I found Chance (AKA Rebel) with the Pender Endangered Animal Rescue (PEAR) Group.  Chance was one of 22 puppies abandoned in Hugh Mcrae Park at only one week old. Only seven of the pups survived; he was one of the lucky ones. We had an immediate connection and I signed the adoption papers and took him home at 10 weeks old.

Chance became my companion, my best friend and my reason to get up in the morning.  As a Person with Narcolepsy (PWN), I have days where I am so exhausted, it is hard to get out of bed.  Chance watches over me when I sleep, nudges me to get me up and lets me know when someone is at door.  He has a big bark but a bigger heart.

Shortly after I got Chance, signs of Hip Dysplasia started to appear and he at 6 months old the diagnosis was confirmed. I knew that someday, he might need surgery to repair it however, it did not make me love him any less. I vowed to give him the best life and he gave me constant unconditional love.  Everyone that meets Chance quickly sees what a special dog he is.  He is friendly with all furry animals including cats and other dogs that I have fostered for rescue groups.

These are some of foster cats and dogs we have mentored.

Several months ago, Chance started having some hip problems and he lost important muscle tone known as Atrophy.   With the help of his vet Dr. Carol at Hanover Regional Animal Hospital, he was on crate rest and limited exercise so that he could heal slowly.  During this time he slipped on the floor and he injured his CCL.  It was not until we had x-rays sent to Dr. Williams at Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral that the severity was known.

Chance has completely torn the ACL in both of his knees. It is so severe; the only option is surgery on both knees to repair the damage. Accompanied by the severe hip dysplasia in which both hips are technically dislocated, this makes it difficult and painful to walk. This will require at least two surgeries, medication and therapy. The vet told me most dogs in this condition wouldn't be able to walk, but Chance's resilience amazes me as he continues to hobble with a big smile on his face regardless of the chronic pain he is in.

Many have suggested perhaps he should be put down.  That is not an option for me.  Chance just turned 5 years old.  He has many more squirrels to chase, dogs to play with, delivery men to bark at to alert me and many more years as my best friend, loyal companion, and emotional support dog -- TRULY MY EVERYTHING.

I am asking for any help you can find in your heart to give.  Many family and friends have jumped in to help.  My work family at Splish Splash Dog Wash are going to have a Wash a Thon on July 9th.  All proceeds to go to Chance’s Surgery Fund.  I am working extra days and saving as much as I can as well but he needs this surgury soon before further damage is done.

100% of all proceeds and donations will go directly to Chance's Surgery Fund which has been set up through the Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral Orthopedic Clinic for Chance’s care and expenses.

It has been said that a dog is truly man's best  friend...Chance is MY BEST FRIEND.  Help me, help him.

Chance and I thank you deeply for your support and every donation is greatly appreciated.
