Consider the nights where you're lying awake in bed; you have questions racing through your head and all you can do is dwell on them. That is what my Detroit classroom is like; the students are constantly probed with questions that keep them thinking. This semester, we will be exploring the question "What is freedom?"
My tenth graders will be reading the novel Monster by Walter Dean Myers, along with studying other stories, articles, songs, essays, and documentaries. They will be writing persuasive essays, poems, and stories which will culminate to our final project; an anthology. This anthology will be sold in Pages Bookshop in Detroit.
Coming from an urban city, many of my students feel like they have been left behind or forgotten. They know how people view them; they know how society judges them. Still, many of them push forward.
I want to give these students an incredible opportunity, and getting them published like I'm going to is, but I want to go further and make this even better. The students who are chosen for the anthology will get a fieldtrip to the bookstore for their launch party where their writing is being sold.
This trip will be this June of 2016. I expect about 30 students getting published and joining this field trip, and expect an average book to be about $13-$16. I am trying to raise enough money to allow my students to purchase a book, no cost to them.
As an English teacher and a book lover, I want to encourage reading and writing among my students. My goal is to support a locally owned bookstore and support students' excitment for taking home new books.
Please help support my students and the encouragement of loving books! All it takes is one person to help ignite that passion and then books become a student's friend, future, and education moving forward.
