Give Two Abandoned Dogs From Sint Maarten a Second Chance

About Me:
Hello, I'm Georgia, a passionate animal lover and medical student at American University of the Caribbean in Sint Maarten. For 15 years, I've been a vegetarian, driven by my deep compassion for animals and my desire to be a voice for the voiceless. I'm also a proud mom to a rescue dog named Mama who found her way from the streets of Sint Maarten to my heart in February. I can assure you, rescue dogs make amazing and committed companions!
The Cause:
I'm on a mission to make a difference in the lives of stray dogs, particularly those in Sint Maarten. I've taken it upon myself to care for two homeless dogs who were abandoned by their abusive owner on the Dutch side of the island. Every day, I supply them with food, water, medications and lots of love. Unfortunately, due to a large overpopulation issue, the local shelters are over capacity and the dogs have had zero adoption interest from anyone based in Sint Maarten.
Despite being fed every day, the dogs’ condition is quickly deteriorating on the streets. Their ribs are becoming more prominent, and their collars are becoming noticeably loose. To make matters worse, I am scheduled to leave the island permanently in a couple weeks so I will no longer be able to care for them. Due to restrictions on dogs from Sint Maarten entering the USA, the dogs can’t be flown there to find their forever homes. Additionally, airlines don’t allow dogs to fly in cargo to Canada until the beginning of November when temperatures are cooler. This leaves almost 3 months where the dogs would be without care. Despite my efforts, I have not been able to find a local foster who would be willing to keep the dogs until they could be flown to Canada in November. The thought of leaving them to fend for themselves was unbearable so I took to social media to share the dogs’ story, seek help from the community and make a plan for them.
On Wednesday, August 14th, I will be taking the dogs to the vet to be spayed, and I have told the vet to move ahead with parasite testing, microchip insertion, vaccinations and health certificates. I have not yet found forever homes for the dogs in Canada, but thankfully a boarding facility was generous enough to offer me a discounted rate so the dogs will be staying there until their freedom flights.
At the moment, there are two different options for getting the dogs back to Canada. I will share more details via Instagram once I decide which route to take but both involve boarding the dogs for some time, buying flight tickets and other costs such as spaying, blood tests, microchips, vaccinations, travel documentation, medications etc. Please consider donating to help cover the costs of caring for these dogs. Every dollar counts and together, we can make a real impact on their lives.
The next step in this journey is finding these sweet creatures homes in Canada. If you or someone you know might be interested in adopting one or both of them, please reach out to me. Also, please continue to share their story so we can give them the happy lives they deserve! Thank you for being a part of this journey to make a difference in the lives of animals in need. Your support means the world to me and my furry friends and every penny will be used responsibly.
