Now it is time that we, those who know and love Diana Funk, reach out to everyone we can, in every corner of the world, to ensure enough money is donated to help get Diana in to see the doctors of the Jacksonville Mayo Clinic and allow them to focus their efforts to save Diana’s life! Yes save her life!

Diana and Sully - gift from a friend during last hospital stay

Before outlining how Diana Funk has ended up in need of your generous donations and fundraising support in order to gain access to the outstanding doctors at the Mayo Clinic please allow me to share with you the initial costs of receiving treatment there.

First a deposit of $5000.00 must be presented upon arrival at the clinic for administration, registration and preliminary testing. Once the initial testing is complete a second payment must be made in order to have the entire Mayo Clinic team of specialist review those original tests and determine what else must be done to find the answers on how to heal and cure Diana Funk! There will be continued costs for further testing, treatments and her stay at the Mayo Clinic.

Diana does have health insurance yet being unable to work since March 28th 2017, needing to pay for doctor visits, testing, the co-pay and deductible costs along with bare minimum living expenses has depleted her savings and left her unable to pay the past couple of months medical expenses. These include her recent hospital stay after doctors admitted her based on MRI results. These bills and the investment required to have her see the best medical team available have us setting our fundraising goal at a minimum of $25,000.00.

Diana’s present neurologist, Dr. Lara Fix, has strongly suggested this treatment center may be the last and only medical facility able to determine what exactly is causing her body to be shutting down so unusually and how to treat her best to heal her back to full health. Dr. Venu Jasti, Cardiologist, who is also treating Diana, expressed to her that in his professional opinion she must seek further care at the Mayo Clinic in order to get the answers needed to save her life.

Allow me to now share with you the details of all that have been happening to Diana since the seemingly minor tissue puncture which happened to her while she was busy at work.

Diana's Story -

Tuesday March 28th 2017 was the day that began Diana’s journey from happy, successful, healthy, hard-working employee to a woman struggling to find solutions, treatments and specialists who will work together and find answers to allow her to gain back her health, her happiness and her entire future life!

 Diana at work

Diana Funk is by profession an experienced dog groomer. During an in clinic groom Diana received a flesh wound to her right hand which looked to require stitches. Diana was immediately sent to a local urgent care for treatment by her employer.

The treatment she received was basic. The wound was cleaned and bandaged. Diana was given tetanus, rocephin and toradol injections then sent home. Sadly this was the start of what seems to now be a never ending horror story as the wound did not heal properly. Diana’s body had acquired some bacteria which were multiplying rapidly and causing her to become quite ill.

During the month of April 2017 doctors prescribed 27 antibiotics, 12 injections, 9 other medications, a debridement of the wound site and then chose to refer Diana to an orthopedic surgeon/specialist and an infectious disease specialist for their review of her case. The orthopedic surgeon, made a diagnosis which required him to perform surgery on Diana’s hand.

Time and again, each new blood draw for testing continued to show Diana’s body was fighting some type of infection.

One week after first surgery to clear infection from finger

The month of May had Diana visiting multiple doctors for follow up appointments which left her with more questions unanswered. Doctors made a  determination that Diana was still not well enough to return to work, leaving Diana frustrated and searching for answers so she could resume her previous full time working routine.  Diana loved her work and wanted to be able to go back to her job as soon as possible.

When June arrived, Diana’s body was still fighting an unknown infection. It was decided that another surgery would be performed to attempt to locate the source and clear it from her body completely. As a patient in search of healing Diana did not question her doctor’s advice and the procedure was done. A number of days after this surgery Diana came to realize she was becoming increasingly more ill rather than feeling better and took herself to an emergency department. Sadly, the surgery did not remove the infection from her body and she was admitted to the hospital with severe sepsis and necrosis where the wound was. While in hospital Diana’s treatment included an extreme regime of IV antibiotics. Upon her discharge she was given prescriptions for two other different antibiotics.

 Necrosis taking over finger

Due to losing faith in the care she was receiving, Diana fought to be referred to a new hand specialist and won. Her blood work continued to show infection along with high counts on liver, kidneys, sed rate, c-reactive, platelets and red count.

July arrived with Diana still complaining of something being “in” the wound she had received in March. During her first visit to the new hand specialist, Dr. Robert Forster, orthopaedic surgeon, Diana is instructed to quit all medications! After listening to all that has transpired since March 28th, the doctor said he was appalled to learn of all the antibiotics her body had been forced to endure.

He wished to give Diana’s body a rest.

 Kobe keeping watch over Diana

August arrives bringing with it some positive actions. Diana begins going to hand physiotherapy in an effort to get the muscles and ligaments moving again which had become stiff do to lack of use. Diana is now experiencing extensive nerve damage after her surgeries and requires treatment to attempt to desensitize the effected area. New protocol was added for Diana to take a specific drug for nerve damage.

Physiotherapy for Diana's hand continued in September as well as the routine blood testing. Results coming back from the blood tests become increasingly alarming, showing everything off the charts for her organs and evidence confirming Diana was still living with some type of infection.

The month of October included more blood testing. Answers were not being found! Test results showed that Diana’s pancreas had stopped working, her liver counts were high, and kidney counts were also high, magnesium levels low, B12 levels low and inflammation markers extremely high. A sample also detected blood in her urine.

During November it was decided by medical specialists that Diana must begin administering insulin daily and that she must see more specialists. Her first episode of reverse vertigo occurred and added to the doctor’s confusion as to what could possibly be causing Diana’s body to be so ill. Blood was now being drawn and tested on  regular closer together intervals in the hopes of finding answers but none were found. Diana continued to become more ill and doctors began prescribing more medications to “try”. As there were no definitive answers being found...this try, wait and see treatment was causing Diana more concern than ever.

December there was no change. Every blood test was coming back with seriously negative results to which no doctor was able to give an answer. It was decided that Diana would be seen by a rheumatologist, Dr. Ranju Wadhwa, as Lupus was now a consideration for a diagnosis. More blood work was done and all of the tests did show Diana was experiencing an auto immune system failure but the exact test for a Lupus determination came back negative. Even so, Diana was prescribed specific medications for persons with Lupus.

January 2018: a new year without any new answers.
Diana experienced her second episode of reverse vertigo and went back to her neurologist. The doctor found she was unable to pass basic in office tests and had Diana go for a CT scan of her brain, an EEG and an order for MRI was put in.

Blood testing continued through February and Diana’s rheumatologist chose to start her on anti-malaria drugs in effort to treat the Lupus-like symptoms. A third surgery was performed on Diana's hand furthering efforts to remove the infection plaguing her body.

March proved to be the month declaring the end of a full year fighting an unknown infection in Diana’s body! The order to have an MRI of her brain was also approved resulting in the finding of a subacute infarction and 0.7cm mass in left occipital lobe. Doctors told Diana she would need to repeat the MRI in a months’ time.

Diana had experienced her first stroke.

April testing came back with positive news after 2D echocardiogram and carotid ultrasound both came back with normal results.

Diana’s follow up MRI was performed in May showing the 0.7 cm mass in left occipital lobe and the infarction both present. A new 0.2cm mass was now found present in left cerebral, also left thalamus, and left parietal. White matter appears with volume averaging. Diana’s doctor calls her with these results and immediately admits her to the hospital.

Doctors determined Diana had now experienced 5 strokes to the left side of her brain.  "Swiss Cheese" were the words used by doctors to describe the visual look of the left side of Diana's brain."

While under anesthesia Diana has extreme heart tests done which all come back normal. A Venus Ultrasound Doppler is done and the results are normal. Blood work testing comes back with most normal for what doctors are looking for. Diana’s is told that her blood is clotting but they are unable to determine the exact reason for it happening. More medications are prescribed. Diana is presently sustaining on 8 different medications daily, each taken 2 to 3 times per day. Along with these oral medicines Diana receives two vitamin injections a month and continues to self administer insulin.

Diana finishing a style at her #JustWigs location in Florida. Helping others has always been a focus in Diana's life.   (now closed)

Here we are in May of 2018 and Diana is facing more and more questions which seem to have no answers available to them. Doctors determined she has had one stroke which resulted in part of her brain trauma. After the follow up testings evidence of four other strokes can be seen adding to the urgency of finding help and answers to her illness.

Surgery to implant a loop recorder was done on May 4th and now Diana’s heart is being monitored around the clock. Each night a transmission is sent to her doctor to see if/when clots are being thrown through the heart. This device will be active inside Diana for at least three years.

No answer has been determined by any of the doctors who have been treating and testing Diana. Any treatment she is undergoing now is given with her doctors hopes in that something will be the right medication/mix to stop future strokes from happening.

Diana’s orthopedic specialist recommends a fourth hand surgery to bury the damaged nerves into a bone at the original wound site. This will be an attempt to try and reduce the continued nerve pain Diana has experienced since the first surgery. This latest surgery is yet to be scheduled due to her having to wait a specified length of time from the procedure during which the heart recorder was placed inside her chest.

Finn and Kobe keep Diana's focus on healing strong

Coming to no medical conclusion for Diana’s failing health, her Neurologist and Cardiologist have now prescribed and recommended she be admitted to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville in order to have proper specialized care in hopes of finding an answer and a cure.

Here I conclude Diana's story to date and please know each day more and more happens which we will update for you regularly.  Who I am?

I am Suzanne Borghese. I live in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. It is with Diana's permission that I have created this GoFundMe campaign for her. I am forever thankful for meeting Diana as I did so many years ago through a game we played together on Facebook. The game gave us reason to talk but the universe brought us together as friends. The type of friends you don't get the opportunity to have very often in life.  Diana has a parking spot in my heart forever.

After my oldest son was declared "In Remission" six years ago and I organized a vacation to Florida to meet up with a girlfriend and her son. The plan was to travel through the Keys, two mom's, four kids...and enjoy two weeks of fun and celebrating my son's remission. Sadly I arrived in Florida to find this girlfriend had chosen to back out of out of our travel plans without telling me. Once I called her and received this distressing news I realized I was suddenly in Florida, three kids and no destination plans. The only other person I knew at the time who lived in Florida was Miss Diana Funk. I logged onto Facebook through my cell trying a Wendy's restaurant parking lot and wifi to reach her.  It was simply a miracle I was able to make contact with her! To this day I am still overcome with emotion remembering the next two weeks! Diana took all of us in to her home like we were family. She gave us places to sleep and together we shared wonderful meals. Diana allowed us to fill her days with all sorts of crazy Canadian goodness and craziness! We spent two weeks making unimaginable memories with Diana! To be shown so much unconditional love was simply a miracle to us.  We saw dolphins, watched baby turtles rise up from their nests and wander to the ocean during late night walks on the beach, we experienced and learned so much with Diana.

We had the best vacation/celebrations ever! (2012)
Diana helped us meet up with Shawn Heflick for a behind the scenes tour of the zoo. What a treat for each of us!

I love Diana. My love has continued to grow as our friendship has grown in the now nine years we've known of each other. Through my ups and downs, Diana has not once left my side. Her friendship and love have continued to support me through everything I have been struggling with.

Diana and Suzanne

My goal now is to tell the world about her struggle and asked the world to help  Diana find her health, gain her life back and live until well after I have gone. This world is deserving of Diana Funk and all the positive she has to give.

PLEASE HELP IN ALL THE WAYS YOU CAN...
TOGETHER WE CAN SAVE DIANA'S LIFE !
