Hello friends and encouragers of the Vazquez-Simuta family. Thank you so much for the way you helped to launch their life here in DC. We have good news to share. Father of the family, Leyber, received his Employment Authorization Documents on March 22 and thanks to a friend who led us to the DC Hispanic Contractors Assoc, Leyber started a full-time job this morning, March 27, at 6am! (US construction would not be happening without these hard-working immigrants.)
Mother of the family, Aury, meanwhile has figured out the free bus system for students here in the District and got her three children, 12, 11, and 4, off to their three different schools and then headed on uptown where she takes English classes. She still anxiously awaits her Employment Authorization Documents. It is a crime how long it takes for an immigrant to work legally. That said, the family is so grateful for every opportunity. They are thrilled about this new phase of life.
We are still living together in our home while the drywall next door is being finished, then painting, floors, cabinets, appliances--everything is ready to go. It should be mid-to-late April when they move over one door!
The bad news was that Brian, my husband, cannot walk following a much needed back surgery. Full recovery will be slow and sure. We installed a stairlift and the family has been an incredible help as we navigate this new reality. Brian went back to work as pastor at Westminster DC while I happily hold the mantle of General Contractor for the apartments.
As the family prepares to move next door and begin to take on more of the expenses of life, it would be a tremendous boost to us all if there are those who would like to help pay off the rest of what we owe to the attorneys working on their case. The total attorney cost for the 5 is $10,500 and we have $2,500 left to pay before their first hearing in July. Any gift you can share would allow them to save more as they await the final determination of their case for asylum.
I will update you later on how well the children are faring in this new world of the USA. The photo was taken at Christmas time in front of the White House. It has been a delight to share life together. Thank you for caring. Feel free to reach out to me directly if you would prefer.
Here's to Life Together on this Planet!
Ruth
