On July 4, 2026, tragedy struck when a house fire caused massive damage in home in San Jose, California. Inside was Mooni, a sweet 5-year-old dog, trapped in the intense heat and thick smoke.
Thanks to the incredible efforts of the San Jose Fire Department, Mooni was rescued from the burning home. But frightened and disoriented, she ran back inside the house, suffering even more smoke inhalation and burns before eventually escaping. She then disappeared into the neighborhood for several terrifying hours.
When Mooni was finally reunited with her owner, her condition had rapidly worsened. She was struggling to breathe, suffering the effects of severe smoke inhalation and her injuries. She was rushed immediately to a nearby emergency veterinary hospital, where doctors determined she had sustained significant smoke inhalation, burns, and had developed pneumonia—likely caused by smoke damage and aspiration.
Since that night, Mooni has remained in critical care, receiving oxygen therapy in an oxygen cage, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and around-the-clock monitoring. Her veterinary care has already exceeded $8,000 and the costs continue to rise.
San Jose Firefighters Random Acts, a nonprofit organization operated by San Jose firefighters, has donated $2,000 toward Mooni's emergency treatment. Unfortunately, those funds will only cover her hospitalization through 7:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 8 at which point she will have to be discharged unless additional funding is available.
Mooni's condition remains fair but guarded. Her veterinary team believes that continued hospitalization offers her the best chance at a full recovery. She still requires oxygen therapy, IV fluids because she is not yet eating or drinking on her own, antibiotics to fight her pneumonia, and ongoing critical care while her lungs continue to heal.
Every donation—no matter the amount—will go directly toward Mooni's medical care. If you're unable to donate, sharing her story would mean the world to us.
Mooni has already survived the fire. With your help, we're hoping she can survive the recovery, too.
Thank you for your compassion, generosity, and support during this incredibly difficult time.
