We are filled with joy and anticipation as we prepare to welcome our baby boy, Mathias, into the world. From the moment we found out we were expecting, we began preparing our home and hearts for his arrival. But our excitement quickly turned into heartbreak. During a routine 21-week ultrasound, we received devastating news—there was no amniotic fluid surrounding Mathias . Without it, his lungs cannot develop, and his life is at serious risk.

Further testing revealed an obstruction in Mathias bladder, preventing him from producing the fluid essential for his survival. We were referred to specialists in Texas, where we learned that Mathias also has cysts on his kidneys. The doctors there declined to perform the necessary procedure, and we were told to prepare to carry him to term knowing he would not survive long after birth due to underdeveloped lungs.

But we are not giving up. We’ve now been connected with Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where a life-saving procedure called amniotic infusion is available. This treatment can help Mathias’ lungs develop, giving him a fighting chance. After birth, he will likely face kidney complications that may require a transplant as he grows. We will need to remain in Baltimore until Mathias is born to receive ongoing infusions and care.

This journey has turned our lives upside down. We both work and own our home, but now we must leave everything behind to save our son. We still have a mortgage to pay and must repair our home, which was damaged when we discovered black mold—an environment unsafe for any child, especially one with serious health challenges.
