Hello, my name is Sarah, and I am here to ask for help saving our puppy, Lempira. This is Lempira, our 5-month-old puppy, and his dad Blue in the photo. Three weeks ago, while we were traveling in Honduras, we got the heartbreaking call that Lempira had suddenly started having seizures. He was rushed to the emergency veterinary hospital, when our other dog, Blue, also began seizing. Both were given emergency treatment, and while Blue recovered quickly, Lempira’s condition worsened.
Both dogs were stabilized and sent home with medication. By the time I made it home from my trip two days later, Lempira was stiff, shaking, and his condition hadn't gotten any better, so I rushed him back to the hospital. The first hospital pushed us to euthanize or pay $6,000 for a neurologist consult, but that just simply wasn't possible. I knew I needed another opinion. I drove him to a different hospital with a phenomenal team, and they gave him a fighting chance. After a full day in the hospital, and another check-in the next day, Lempira was stable enough to send home again.
The vets believe he was poisoned with Strychnine, a toxin found in rodenticide, which we do not have on our property. Somehow, he ingested it, and it nearly cost him his life. Despite the odds, Lempira began to improve—he is no longer stiff, can sit up on his elbows, wags his tail every time he sees me, and if I help him up, he can balance for a moment before sinking back down.
The reality is: he still cannot stand or walk on his own, and if he can't recover, I may still be faced with the possibility of having to put him down. The doctor said if he wasn’t walking in 2 weeks, permanent damage might remain. But I believe in giving him time. Nerve healing can be slow, and as long as he’s not in pain, happy, and showing progress, I want to give him that chance. The veterinarian agreed to give him some more time.
So far, between the two dogs, our vet bills have reached $2,500, and Lempira may need additional therapies, medications, or specialist care. I want to do everything possible for him—but I can’t do it alone.
Lempira is more than just a dog—he’s Blue’s son, Harley’s adopted pack member, and deeply loved by us. He’s only 5 months old, and he deserves the chance to live the life he’s fighting for.
If you can help by donating or sharing his story, it would mean the world to us. Every contribution, no matter how small, helps us keep fighting for Lempira.
From the bottom of my heart—thank you for helping us give him the best chance at life.
