One week ago, LaDonna Kirkpatrick received heartbreaking news from her doctor: Without a specialized prosthetic device known as the ExoSym for both of her legs, she may never walk again and will face the strong possibility of amputation.

LaDonna was born with Bilateral Clubfeet, a condition that affects over 200,000 children around the world each year. Growing up in foster care, she spent her childhood fighting for proper medical care—undergoing multiple painful surgeries and recoveries in hope of one day walking, running, and living the active life she dreamed of and worked so hard for.

While other kids were hiking, skating, skiing, or playing sports, LaDonna was in hospitals and recovery rooms. Despite all her efforts, the condition was never fully corrected, and now, her mobility has deteriorated to the point where prosthetics are her only option.

LaDonna is a devoted wife and mother of four. She works as a social worker, dedicating her life to advocating for foster children and youth struggling with eating disorders. She also helped author the Foster Child Bill of Rights, which is on track to become Washington state law in the near future.

Her Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Meeker, recommends the ExoSym prosthetics to avoid dangerous surgery that could leave her permanently in a wheelchair without the ability to walk.. LaDonna’s hope is simple, relatable, and powerful: to walk hand-in-hand with her husband, to play with her kids, and to reclaim the freedom so many of us take for granted.

Due to a loophole in Washington state law, insurance will not cover the $27,000 cost of these life-changing devices. LaDonna and her family do not earn enough to shoulder that kind of burden.
