Hi friends!
As some of you may know, my sister Kristy suffered a pretty bad ankle break last July, 7/31/2022. She was with a friend enjoying one of her favorite pastimes- a hike upstate on a rare weekend off from work when she slipped on her descent from Millbrook Mountain. The foot carrying her weight slid in front of her causing her ankle to audibly snap as it formed a 90-degree angle (later to find out that the fibula was broken into two pieces). Adrenaline carried her through the duration of the hike out after which she went straight to the ER, but little has supported her up until now. In fact, it has been an arduous uphill battle my sister has endured these past 10 months.
Kristy initially saw an orthopedic surgeon who put her in a walking boot and expected her to heal. Four months later, the X-rays showed zero bone growth and provided proof of the extremely poor care she, unfortunately, received from that provider. Resulting second and third opinions both stated that the bone would never heal this way and that surgery was needed from the beginning. Five months, one titanium plate, 10 screws and a whole lot of frustration and discomfort after the slip on the mountain, Kristy began her healing journey- again.
There’s never the right time for an accident, it is a painful and isolating experience and this one robbed my sister of some special moments this past year, including properly celebrating her 50th in Europe as she was long planning. And since both of Kristy’s jobs are public-facing and require her to stand (as a dental assistant and as a Visitor Experience Associate at THE SHED art space in NYC), she hasn’t been able to work. The healing duration would have been manageable had she received the proper guidance originally, but since she has suffered twice as long from this ordeal I am finally reaching out.
Thankfully, Kristy is finally on the mend- her ankle is feeling better, she is upright and her spirits high. And though very eager to resume her busy working life, Kristy has been advised to take it slow and it will be some time before she has the strength to work regularly. Obviously, her finances have been impacted- her savings exhausted and she has had to resort to loans for rent. So PLEASE join me as I celebrate my big sister, bring some relief to the stress and help her move on from this! If anyone out there is able to help Kristy on this last leg of her healing journey and throw her some bones (not ankle) we would all so greatly appreciate it!!
