Kathy was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 12. In 1985, she had her first hip replacements. Complications and the onset of osteoarthritis began causing problems, especially in her left hip and led to a series of replacements beginning in 1997. In 2003, after her 5th left hip replacement, she contracted an infection which eventually required the complete removal of that hip joint. After this surgery, she needed crutches to walk. The original right hip replacement began causing problems in 2014. Two years later, she experienced several hip dislocations; the joint is no longer stable enough for repair. She now requires a wheelchair. She has a motorized chair for at home use, but must switch to a manual chair to go anywhere. On a trip to the doctor, Kathy must make multiple transfers (wheelchair to car/car to wheelchair to the doctor and again on the return trip home). These transfers are difficult and painful as is the ride in the car. Since the manual chair weighs about 50 pounds, it takes someone strong to lift it into the car. Kathy won't be driving, but having an accessible vehicle with a ramp or lift will make any car trip easier. It will also enable her to go out more often with family and friends.
A Kia Soul rear entry vehicle is the solution. It will allow Kathy to travel in her motorized chair. This will eliminate the difficult transfers using the manual chair. A strong back will no longer be needed to store the manual chair in the car.
Funds will be used to purchase a used Kia Soul which usually cost about $30,000 or more.
All donations are greatly appreciated.
