Jacob is a remarkable young man who has already faced more challenges than most people his age. Growing up in San Francisco’s Tenderloin, he was raised with the love and support of family who stepped in and helped care for him along the way. Like many families in our communities, people came together to make sure he was looked after and supported through the ups and downs of life.

Through it all, Jacob has kept a bright smile and a positive spirit. He’s the kind of person who finds reasons to laugh and brings joy to the people around him.

Right now, Jacob is facing serious vision problems that have made it difficult for him to move forward with some of the opportunities many young adults hope for. One of his eyes has been so badly damaged that it will require a corneal transplant, meaning he has to be placed on a donor list and undergo major surgery. His other eye is affected by keratoconus, a condition that causes the cornea to weaken and distort over time and requires specialized treatment and possibly surgery to prevent further vision loss.

Because of these vision challenges, things many people take for granted—like going to school, working, driving, and gaining independence—have been much harder for Jacob to pursue.

But with the right medical care, Jacob has a real chance at restoring his sight.
