There is no easy way to say this, and if I have not personally reached out to you, my apologies for that. I am struggling with all of this, and it is unlike anything I have ever been through. I have spent the last week bouncing between emotions that I do not yet know how to handle. I have not purposely or meaningfully left anyone in the dark; just understand that I do not know how to communicate a lot of this right now, and it is difficult for me to talk. Ralph, who has been in my life for over 20 years, who became my best friend and my forever love, my partner in travel and fun and sports and Scrabble and a million other things we do, is very sick. Ralph deserves a second chance at life, and I know none of us want him to leave.

Ralph, who is still young and should be in the prime of his life, has stage 4 decompensated cirrhosis of the liver due to alcoholism. He is grateful that he is now sober at the time of this writing, but he has a very long way to go, and it will not be easy. He needs to be sober for at least 6 months to get on the transplant list. He is being treated with medication right now to help with this and is too weak to do much right now, but he will need to do at minimum a 45-day residential treatment plan for alcoholism in order to help him beat that disease (alcoholism) to be able to fight the next and most difficult one, the cirrhosis. He has been in the hospital for the past week, but he is home now as there is nothing more they can do until we get on the transplant list. We will be seeing a transplant hepatologist in Denver in order to make sure his body can handle a liver transplant. The cost of a transplant surgery can be astronomical. He has medical insurance, but all will not be covered, and there will also be transportation and lodging expenses for all of his long-distance appointments. Anti-rejection drugs can cost patients $2,500 a month.

He is not allowed to work anymore. Due to the malfunctioning liver, his brain is not functioning properly. The ammonia and toxins in his body are affecting brain functionality. We are asking for help, anything you can offer. All monies raised will be used for basic living expenses, as well as insurance copays, prescription refills, and all other medical-related expenses, including travel/lodging for long-distance appointments and rehab. We have applied for disability, but it takes nearly a year for that to be approved.

He hopes to share his experience with others, when he is well enough, so that they might better understand the nature and cause of his disease. Most importantly, if you or anyone you know may have a substance abuse problem, he eventually would like to share his experience in recovery and help anyone with similar struggles.

This giant-hearted and giving person is working every day right now to survive and to stay sober. Please help us give him this second chance at life.
