Give for Humanity: COVID-19 Resources for India

The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the worst health and economic crises in modern history and it continues to require the best of humanity to overcome. This crisis threatens everyone's way of life, but it is especially difficult for some of us. Your donation to this fund will help stop COVID-19's spread and protect many people.

Dear friends,

My name is Damayanti Tiwari. I am an international graduate student in the linguistics department at the Ohio State University. I am from Nasik, Maharashtra, India. Since 2017, I started working with my current advisor Prof. Deo. We together have been working on 8 under-documented languages that belong to the Bhili-Khandeshi language family. These languages are spoken in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh- along the banks of the Narmada river. Today everyone is talking about India. 1   India’s deadly struggle continues unabated and India’s healthcare system is struggling to cope. I have not been able to go home for 2 years.

I feel sorry for my country and I want to do something even though I am not there physically. Living in the USA seeing people walking around without masks and dining indoors at restaurants and at the same time seeing India’s number of cases increasing, receiving calls and messages from language consultants, friends, social workers about who tested positive, how there is no oxygen, food, medicines every day. I feel like I am betraying my country by being here. When my loved ones need me, especially my language consultants who live across 7 mountain ranges (Satpura range2 ) without electricity, phone connectivity, and next to no medical help available. I feel guilty and paralyzed by powerlessness. Given limited stipend and family responsibilities I have limitations on how much I can help financially. Initiating this fundraiser is an attempt to siphoning despair into action and hope.

Solution

Your donation to this fund will help stop the virus's spread and give tribal communities, people in Nasik who are on the front lines of the crisis.  They need resources to heal quickly and protect themselves.  Funds are disbursed by Give for Humanity will work with non-profit partners; this includes social workers based in the city and villages on the ground to get funds where they're most needed. The local partners/organizations do not have a webpage but their contact information can be provided if inquired.

1.     Make COVID-19 medicines more accessible, getting them to hospitals and clinics.

2.     Helping to create affordable alternative isolation centers for communities in need. Sending masks, equipment like oxygen cylinders, and other lifesaving medical supplies.

3.     Deliver food (raw grains, sugar, etc., and prepared meal packages), essential items to struggling families and older individuals in quarantine centers and home quarantine.

4.     Support hygiene awareness efforts. And much, much more...

I know believing a stranger (individual) and being cautious and trusting funds are going in the right place can be hard. I myself only donate when I am confident. The key reason, I am doing this is to bring awareness about calamity, and sometimes people want to donate but organizations do not have permission to receive legally receive charitable funds from donors outside of India and if they have international transactions are complex to navigate through. But covid is affecting the entire India so there are other organizations who are helping if you do not wish to donate here.
