Update: Finn will be picked up this afternoon. He was able to use the bathroom and eat this morning. The surgeon said that he was only able to take a couple steps and needed support. She is not overly concerned about it. Also said that today and tomorrow will probably be the most rough and the most tough for him. Will keep you all posted!!
Hey all, my name is Drew and our firstborn is in need of your help. Our 8-year-old Labradoodle named Finn was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive, fast-spreading bone cancer.
Finn is a loving, energetic, and protective part of our family. He is just the absolute best!! What started with just some swelling of his wrist turned into a diagnosis that changed everything.
On Tuesday, June 10th, we brought Finn to the vet to check the swelling of his leg. When the vet tech walked into the room, I could tell that something was wrong. My first reaction to her was not good as she shook her head. That's the news that absolutely broke my heart. We got Finn when he was just 9 months old. He will be turning 9 in December.
Even with a clear chest X-ray, the blood work they did only showed an elevated ALT level.
On Friday, June 13th, we had our appointment with the surgeon. They took Finn into the back to do the exam. The vet tech came back to the room to ask about blood work. While she was in the room, she said, "Sorry it's taking so long. The surgeon wanted another doctor to look at Finn as well." Neither one could definitively say that it is osteosarcoma, but they are still leaning towards that. Other than the swelling, they said he is atypical due to no other symptoms.
When asked if it could potentially be something else, there were a few options, but 4 out of 5 things they thought it could be would result in an amputation.
Following the amputation, it is recommended that we follow up with chemotherapy.
The vet said that Finn, with amputation and chemotherapy, Finn could have another year or two. The hardest part is trying to explain to our 3-year-old son what is about to happen.
**Tomorrow, Finn will be going under the knife to become the newest tripod of our family**
If you're able to make a donation, we appreciate it!!
Whatever money is left over will be donated to local animal shelters.
