For the past decade, Fennel Doyle has poured her heart and soul into the Divisadero Median Garden—a one-block public oasis she built out of pocket as a single mom. Her vision was to create a space of common peace and rejuvenating energy, transforming a stretch of neglected cityscape into a vibrant haven for bees, birds, butterflies, and neighbors alike. Many in the DIVISfam community came to cherish this landmark, finding joy and connection among the native plants and flowers.
The garden’s roots trace back to a life-changing car crash on the way to Ocean Beach that broke both of Fennel’s legs. It was a miracle she survived, and soon after, she welcomed her son into the world. The trauma and pain of that experience became fuel for her art—a way to rage against the overlooked mortal dangers of city streets and transform them into sensational pleasure for all living beings to enjoy. Grateful for the gift of movement, Fennel dedicated herself to creating beauty and safety where it was needed most.
This fundraiser is not about rebuilding the garden, but about honoring the gardener. For ten years, Fennel has worked early Sunday mornings, tending to the soil and nurturing a vision of beauty and resilience. As a San Francisco solar punk indie artist, she created the garden to honor Black American Jazz musicians who inspired her, working with rich black soil to cultivate heritage horticulture through both joy and pain. Now, the community has a chance to "Water the gardener," "Feed the field monkey," and "Give Fennel Her Flowers"—to show gratitude for her labor of love and help her feel the appreciation she deserves. Your support will be a meaningful gesture of thanks for all she has given.
