Give directly to Myanmar Earthquake victims

This fund raising is being undertaken by Rich Emerson and Monica Dalmasso. We live in Chamonix, France and we recently visited Myanmar, including Lake Inle, one of the areas directly hit by the earthquake. All the money raised will be sent out there to a friend who will then give the money directly to the people affected. The money will be used to help rebuild houses.

On a compris l’ampleur de la catastrophe en arrivant au lac Inle. Plus d’eau potable et 2000 maisons en bambou détruites. Certains villages n’avaient reçu aucun secours 10 jours après le tremblement de terre.

On a fait tout ce qu’on pouvait sur place, mais ça n’était pas suffisant. On a compris qu’avec environ 10 euros on peut reconstruire 1M2 de maison en bambou, et ça nous a donné des ailes.

Voilà pourquoi on a créé cette cagnotte.

Tous les fonds récoltés seront directement transférés à un ami de confiance sur place, qui les remettra personnellement aux familles les plus affectées. L'argent servira essentiellement à la reconstruction des maisons détruites.

On March 28, whilst eating lunch outside a Buddhist temple in Bagan, the ground and trees started shaking, the dogs started barking and the locals started shouting and banging cooking utensils. Little did we know that in Mandalay and other parts of Myanmar many buildings would collapse and people would die.

We had planned to visit Lake Inle a few days later but after several calls and emails we discovered that the hotel we were booked into had, along with many people’s ‘stilt’ houses, simply fallen into the lake.

A shortage of flight stopped us returning to Yangon so we travelled to Kalaw and there we met with a well connected tourist guide who knew what was happening on the lake. We asked if there was any way we could help. After phone calls with a group of nurses and a friend who had visited the lake, it sounded like medical supplies and money to rebuild houses, given directly, was the best way forward.

We contacted some friends in the UK who were able to send us some money quickly and we were able to change our ‘emergency dollars’ into local currency and make a plan to visit the lake. We bought $150 of medical supplies, booked a boat and planned an early morning start.

Visiting the lake the destruction was massive. Houses and temples were on their sides and nothing except a few posts were what remained of other buildings. There are 28 villages on the lake and we understand that over 2000 houses were damaged or lost completely.

We managed to visit 2 separate villages and the nurses gave out vitamins, diarrhoea medication and antibiotics and checked the blood pressure of more than 100 people from age 2 months to 82 years. We also gave out $450 in cash to 50 families.

We’d like to raise more money to give out to these villagers to help them rebuild their houses.

Building materials (mainly bamboo) and labour are cheap. But constructing houses takes time and with the rainy season less than 2 months way there is real urgency. The cost of repairs will vary but to build a new bamboo house will cost around 10€ per square meter..

Your donation will go directly into the hands of people who really need it. Your money will come into our bank account then we’ll transfer it to the local tourist guide. We trust him 100%. He will go down to the lake and will speak with village elders and agree who needs the money most and how much to give them.

We didn’t see much evidence of NGO or government support, we imagine that much of this is focused in Mandalay where the destruction was greater. We did however see lots of of community support - church groups, school groups and groups of friends were visiting villages and donating food, clothing and tarpaulins.

Par un hasard total, je me suis retrouvée à Bagan en Birmanie au moment du tremblement de terre alors que j’aurais dû me trouver sur le lac Inle…

Le voyage a alors changé de couleur

28 Mars 2025 : Une énorme secousse de magnitude 7, 7 traverse la Birmanie.

Le temps s’est arrêté, les arbres se sont mis à bouger et j’ai eu impression que le sol allait s’ouvrir sous mes pieds. Les chiens aux alentours sont devenus fous, et les habitants tapaient sur les ustensiles de cuisine dans un vacarme assourdissant

On se trouvait à Bagan, au milieu de la magnifique forêt de temples, sur place il n’y a pas eu de gros dégâts.

Mais à Inle, tout a été détruit. L’hôtel où au aurait dû se trouver au moment du tremblement de terre a été englouti par le lac.

Pas de possibilité de rentrer à Yangon par la route, ni en avion on est donc partis à Kalaw, dans les montagnes, là où le séisme n’avait pas trop fait de dégâts.

Après pas mal d’interrogations sur la meilleure façon d’apporter de l’aide, on a décidé de se joindre à une expédition menée par des infirmières pour porter assistance aux habitants du lac Inle.

Grace à l’argent qui nous restait pour finir le voyage et à des dons d’amis de Rich, on a pu acheter des médicaments et préparer des enveloppes avec un peu de cash à donner aux habitants.

En arrivant sur place on a compris l’ampleur de la catastrophe.

Certains habitants du lac Inle n’avaient reçu aucun secours 10 jours après le tremblement de terre. De leur maison il ne reste rien, ou juste 1 ou 2 bambous planté au milieu d’un lac aux eaux noires. Pour la famille sur la photo, le ponton flottant a permis de sauver le plancher, mais tout le reste a disparu.

Les volontaires rencontrés sur place sont prêts à distribuer l’argent collecté . Pour acheter des médicaments et surtout pour reconstruire. On a confiance en eux à 100%.

Il n’y a pas d’intermédiaire, à part les frais pris par la cagnotte, tous les dons iront directement aux habitants du lac.

Pour tous ces regards croisés, cette douceur et cette résilience qui m’ont tant impressionnée, j’espère très fort qu’on pourra faire reconstruire quelques maisons.
