A Fresh Start for Deedee — Helping a Teen Build a Home

My name is Ms. Hydes, and I’m a Spanish teacher at Seaford High School. Last year, I met a bright, kind, and resilient young woman — whom I’ll call Deedee to protect her privacy — when she was a student in my Spanish I class. Over time, she opened up and shared her story with me, and it’s one that no child should ever have to live through.

Deedee lost her mother when she was only 11 years old, and her father was never part of her life. Since then, she has faced unimaginable challenges and instability that most adults never will, moving through the foster care system with grace, strength, and a kind heart. For a very long time, Deedee hasn’t had the comfort of a real home. Instead, she’s been living in a group home, hoping and praying that one day someone would want to foster her and give her a family again.

Her story touched me deeply, and I truly believe that God brought us into each other’s lives for a reason. I’ve made the decision to foster Deedee and welcome her into my home by the end of November. Despite everything I’m currently juggling as a mom and full-time teacher, I want to give her what every child deserves — a loving, stable family.

Right now, Deedee has very few clothes and only a couple pairs of shoes — most of which she doesn’t feel comfortable wearing to school. As we all know, high school can be a tough place for any teenager, and kids can be cruel without realizing the impact of their words. She’s become very self-conscious about her clothes, shoes, and appearance simply because she doesn’t have the same things her peers do.

I’m hoping to raise $5,000 to help her start this new chapter with dignity and confidence. The funds will go toward furnishing her bedroom, buying clothes, shoes, and personal items, and creating a warm, welcoming space where she can finally feel comfortable and cared for.

Due to foster care privacy regulations, I cannot share her photo, but I’ve included a picture of myself so you can see the person behind this campaign. Every contribution — no matter how small — will go directly toward helping Deedee build a life filled with stability, love, and hope.
