Hello, I am reaching out for support for Cora, the dog who belonged to David Burall. (Chef Dave) David worked at Tiki Jac's Street Eats & Brews, Milford Diner, and Snappers Waterfront Tiki, and he was a graduate of Queen Anne's County High School. David passed away two weeks before the closing on his home. His two dogs needed help right away. Roshi, the white dog, went back to Grass Roots Rescue in Delaware. Cora was left with no legal owner. She cannot return to her former rescue because she originally came through Talladega Dog Rescue in Preston, run by Katie Wickum, and many people already know the history there. Talladega closed, so there is no group responsible for taking her back.
Cora had a difficult start. She was found injured in North Carolina and placed on a euthanasia list. David adopted her because he believed she deserved better. When we picked her up the day before the home closed, she showed intelligence, joy, and playfulness with her temporary foster. Later that evening, she showed nipping and aggressive behavior. The roommate told us at pickup that she had issues, but we were not informed before that moment.
If we walked away, she would have gone to animal control with limited behavior support. She could be adopted by someone unprepared, returned again, or even listed as a dangerous dog for fear-based behavior. Cora has potential with the right guidance. I do not feel safe turning her over to animal control with limited resources and supports.
Cora is almost out of time at her boarding kennel. She ages out during Thanksgiving week. I already paid $135 for her overdue vaccines because she was almost two years behind, and I am paying her (generously) reduced boarding fees myself to keep her safe, although still an expense. Cora will need to see a Veterinarian ($) again to receive a Health Certificate for transport.
I am raising $2500 (behavioral rescue, training and extended care) plus $500 (Veterinary & Boarding) in David’s honor to send Cora (via volunteer transport) to Ontario, Canada. She will work with Jeff Baker at Saw A Need Dog Rescue Training and Psychology Centre, a specialist in behavior rehabilitation who helps dogs with fear and aggression concerns and ultimately properly adopted with his approval. The original cost was $3500 but charitably discounted so she has a fair chance at a stable life.
If this were a physical injury, most people would not think twice about donating. Behavioral needs deserve the same help. Cora needs us.
I am asking from the heart. If David’s neighbors, friends, or coworkers are willing to donate in his honor, it will give Cora the future he wanted for her. Timing matters so she can leave boarding and begin treatment soon.
