Boo is a 40 year-old Umbrella Cockatoo who has gone through some pretty horrific things. 20 years ago, he made headline news as he was the subject of a police raid where his mate lay dead in the cage beside him from starvation. He was missing a toe.
He was labelled aggressive and sent to the S.P.C.A.
An "earth angel" adopted him despite his reputation and Boo lived the next 20 years being loved the way he deserved. He does not have an aggressive bone in his body.
Understanding that Boo could potentially live another 40 years and his rescuer was aging, he was gifted to a new home to have time to adjust and still be able to visit his previous owner. Currently, he has settled in beautifully however, he has end stage cataracts and has many challenges with mobility due to this issue.
He has been thoroughly evaluated by an avian vet and a surgical team and deemed healthy to go through cataract removal surgery. If he does not get the surgery, he will go completely blind and his quality of life will diminish. If the surgery is successful, his vision will be substantially restored and he will be able to do all of the things that a bird loves to do (he has not flown in over 20 years due to his poor condition and vision).
Boo has been the "poster bird" of resilience and deserves to have the best life possible. If his vision is restored, he will be utilized in an Animal-Assisted Therapy program with his new owner to participate in therapeutic sessions with individuals who have physical and mental disabilities. Boo absolutely LOVES people!
The surgery requires a specialized exotic anesthesia team who work in tandem with the surgical team. The specialist was kind enough to provide a discount but we still need help making this happen. All donations will go directly to the NC State Exotics where the surgery will take place. If there is any amount over the goal, it will be used to help another animal in need under the specialist's care.
