Meet Honey, Buttermilk, and Biscuit.
In the middle of August, a neighbor found these three kittens under their house. Their mother had abandoned them because they had horrible eye infections. When we got them, they were completely blind, and their eyes were swollen and bulging like marbles. They were tiny things, malnourished and bedraggled and flea infested.
These cats would have been immediately euthanized upon arrival at the shelters here – they don’t have the resources to provide the intense level of care they needed – so our neighbor brought them to us. We care for and rehome the kittens the feral cats in our neighborhood have – more than 40 kittens in the last two years! – and work to get the feral cats altered so the feral population stabilizes.
Our vet looked them over, and gave us antibiotics to administer and creams to apply to their eyes several times a day. They were bottle fed every three hours around the clock. It took many weeks, but slowly their eyes got better, the swelling went down, and all of them eventually had at least one good eye they could see out of, and Honey eventually got his sight back in both eyes.
But Biscuit and Buttermilk will need to have their bad eyes removed to avoid infection, and all three of them will need to be spayed before being adopted out. We have been waiting for them to reach 5 pounds to give them the best chance of surviving surgery, but should be able to schedule it by the end of November (assuming we have the funds, of course).
They have already been to the vet multiple times, been dewormed and fully vaccinated, and eaten a ton of food, stressing our capacity to the max. Usually, we are adopting kittens out by 8 weeks – these guys have been with us for three months as we wait for them to gain weight, and will have to be here at least another month and maybe more. We are already more than $800 into these kittens, and the estimate for their surgeries and aftercare is approximately $3000.
Donated funds will be used to pay for these surgeries and aftercare, and any funds raised above and beyond that will be used to care for the other kittens in our care.
Honey, Buttermilk, and Biscuit had a rough start, and almost didn’t make it to our door. They have distinct, amazing personalities and have been cuddled, cared for, and are well socialized. Please help us make sure they can have the surgeries that will give them a chance to be loved for the rest of their lives in someone’s home.
