Baylie’s GoFundMe
Hello, first I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Cassie Ward. I’m a long time resident of Hampstead and graduate of Topsail High School. My purpose for this GoFundMe page is in the support of my goddaughter Baylie, whom has suffered from a rare form of AVM since birth, and is now scheduled for a partial amputation on her hand. Her family had been members of our Hampstead community for a very long time before their relocation to Florida in 2022. I humbly request that you please take the time to read about Baylie’s story.
An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal connection between arteriesand veins, bypassing the capillary system. The symptoms of AVMs can range from none at all to intense pain or bleeding, and they can lead to other serious medical problems. It is a very serious condition and often can have devastating effects on the patient or results can turn fatal.
Unfortunately, Baylie’s condition has been a long and painful experience that has included being hospitalized many times for infections, extreme bleeding and very thin tissue covering her fingers and palm. The use of one finger is nonexistent and she has only partially functional and mobility in another.
Under the advice of her team of physicians stemming from UNC Chapel Hill Children’s Hospital and Jacksonville Fl Children’s Hospital, the best option of giving Baylie a chance of a pain free and less hazardous situation for the future, they have decided that amputation of the immobile finger.
While having insurance, her family is in need of outside assistance for her recovery. Insurance is not covering the total costs of the surgery and aftercare all of which is 4 hours from home. The average stay for amputation in the hospital, providing all goes well is 5-14 days. She will need physical therapy and occupational therapy to relearn how to function with her new way of living. The doctors have also recommended psychiatric therapy to assist with the emotional trauma that may occur.
In complete transparency and understanding, I want to shared a few of the cost breakdowns.
The cost of arteriovenous malformation (AVM) surgery can range from $20,000 to $91,948, depending on the type of treatment.
Treatment types and costs
• Surgery: The average cost of surgical removal of an AVM is $74,540.
• Surgery with embolization: The average cost of surgical removal with preoperative embolization is $91,948.
• Radiotherapy: The average cost of radiosurgery is $20,917.
If you have made it this far in my plea for your help to give this 15 year old girl a fighting chance at a semi normal life and more functional hand without pain. This hasn’t been an easy sector them to make and has been a long time coming so thank you from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the Moseley family.
