On December 15th, we rescued Barney—a sweet Golden Retriever—from a rural Kentucky shelter with moments to spare…When he arrived in GRRAND’s care, he was severely emaciated and dangerously dehydrated. The vet told us that without our intervention, he likely wouldn’t have survived the night.
During his three-plus hours at the vet, the full extent of his suffering became heartbreakingly clear, revealing the following severe and painful injuries:
• Broken hip socket
• Shattered femoral head
• Torn ACL
HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS!
Barney is safe and loved with one of our best medical fosters while he regains strength and weight and prepares for what is expected to be a long, difficult surgery and recovery. Despite everything he’s endured, Barney remains gentle and trusting, still wagging his tail and constantly seeking pets and affection from his foster mom. He even seems very interested in and affectionate toward her other dogs, while being kept at a safe distance to prevent any further injury to this sweet pup! TRULY A TESTAMENT TO HIS DISPOSITION!
We consulted with a second veterinarian in Louisville, and he is willing to try to save Barney’s leg, but the final decision will be made during surgery. If the damage is beyond repair, amputation will be necessary to relieve his pain and give him a chance to be the bestest boy ever!
Either path comes at a high cost. The vet estimates Barney’s medical care and surgery at $14,000, which, as you would imagine, is a significant expense for our rescue—but one we are committed to covering for him so he can live his best life.
Barney didn’t deserve the pain or neglect he suffered, but he does deserve comfort, healing, and a future filled with love. Your donation—no matter the amount—will go directly toward his lifesaving care and help us give him the second chance he so desperately needs and deserves. If you aren’t able to donate at this time, please share his story.
