Give Back for Patrick

On May 8th, Ginette and Pascaline rushed Dad to the emergency room, suspecting a stroke. Skyrocketing blood pressure guaranteed his immediate admittal, but it was the resulting cascade of complications that kept him in the hospital for over three weeks.

Kind nurses, therapists, and doctors worked hard to keep Dad alive and encouraged as they made sense of body systems run amok. Pascaline and Maman remained by his side day and night as he underwent countless scans, pokings and proddings, surgery, therapies to regain coordination and ability to swallow, more strokes, cardiac arrest, resuscitation, and hospital-induced delirium. Since Dad was admitted to the hospital, the iterations of this GoFundMe page have been as numerous as the ups and downs.

Though there were bright spots along the way, Dad’s condition steadily declined. He endured the hospital sojourn with characteristic lack of complaint and hokey Patrick jokes that made the nurses fall in love with him. But ultimately he wanted most to be home, which—after hard conversations with doctors at their wits’ end and some  excruciating soul-searching—is where we finally brought him.

Family and friends rallied beautifully, and all Dad’s grandkids were able to pour love on him during the days he was home under Hospice care. We had many sweet, precious moments together before he died on June 11th.

Dad was one of the truly good people. The hard part now is figuring out how to live without this tremendous husband, father, grandfather, mentor to many, and humanitarian. He gave so much of his time and heart to helping others both Stateside and abroad, expanding our horizons. Even in death, he did not stop giving, donating his body to further medical research and education.

Upon hearing of his passing, we’ve been flooded with “What can we do?”a and “How can we help?”s. We thank you in advance for any contribution you make in honor of our beloved and much-missed Patrick.
