Help Us Give Angel the Life He Deserves

Hi my name is Effie from Dook Nook Animal sanctuary which is located in Elands NSW

A couple of weeks ago, I spotted a calf by the roadside in someone’s property .

He looked painfully thin, walking in circles, and seemed lost.

When I stopped to check on him, I realised he was blind.

Up close, I saw he was covered in flea bites and ticks—it was heartbreaking.

He was left alone on a property with no water and no grass.

When I contacted the farmer, he told me that a truck had already taken Angel’s family, including his mother (who he was still nursing from). All taken to slaughter.

Angel, only 6 months old, had been left behind because they couldn’t catch him.

The farmer was surprised he had survived this long without food or water and even said he “should have been shot.”

Then I asked if I could take him

He laughed and said good luck take him if you can catch him

Catching him was the easy part—he was so weak. However it took myself and my partner a good hour to put him into my van, it was a site to see, me falling over and getting back up, very determent to get him into my van, all 100 plus kilos of him, not the best job for someone my age

I just had to rescue him no matter what…..Looking into his blind eyes and those long white eyelashes and seeing the pain and fear, My heart broke for him, he was grieving his family and struggling to survive out there in the middle of nowhere on his own.

Angel is now safe with us at Dook Nook Animal Sanctuary, where he will be loved and cherished for the rest of his life. We are a not-for-profit rescue that has been saving animals for 14 years, mostly self-funded—but sometimes, we need to ask for help.

Because Angel is blind, every area he lives in must be specially set up for his safety—with secure fencing, gates, and a consistent layout so he can navigate with confidence. We also need feeding troughs and a water fountain so he can always hear where his water is. Soon, Angel will also have a rescued ex dairy cow companion that was saved from slaughter —a friend with a gentle bell so he can bond, follow, and feel less alone.

Angel has already been treated for fleas and ticks, received his 5-in-1 vaccination, and will be desexed by our visiting vet this week.
