My name is Jenny. My son, Adam, is 16 years old and has a genetic dental condition called Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI). Essentially, he has no enamel on his teeth. His tooth structure is small and pitted, and some teeth have not fully formed. This causes him difficulty with chewing and also leads to pain, sensitivity, and the development of decay, despite our best efforts at dental hygiene.
Thankfully, after years of searching, we have finally found an amazing dentist and oral surgeon. Together they developed a comprehensive plan for Adam's full mouth restoration, and we are ready to get started. The first step involves the removal of his wisdom teeth and all four of his second molars, as none of these teeth have fully developed. At the same time, they will remove his impacted upper canines and graft bone to the area of his second molars to support dental implants down the road. The next step will be to begin crowning his pre-molars and placing dental implants in place of his upper canines. The last step will be crowning all of his remaining teeth, with the potential for root canals if needed.
While this is overwhelming, it is the best treatment to provide Adam with functional teeth for chewing, maximize his quality of life by reducing sensitivity and pain, and give him a beautiful smile to match his personality. While we have dental insurance, it will only cover a fraction of the cost of his dental treatments. The total cost for this treatment (10 extractions, 2 dental implants, and 22 crowns) will likely cost us somewhere between $40,000 out of pocket- after insurance. We have money set aside specifically for this purpose, but even so, it will quickly be used up. I have searched for grants and assistance programs to help cover dental treatments due to genetic conditions like AI and have come up with very little - but have still applied for what I can, with no guarantee. Any amount donated is appreciated and we are grateful for your generosity in helping Adam.
Please feel free to reach out if you would feel more comfortable making an offline donation and I can provide a mailing address.
