GIVE A CHANCE to Jonas (SCHENK EEN KANS aan Jonas)

The 'Give a Chance Foundation' (under construction) in the Netherlands supports and endorses the JONAS CAMPAIGN.

For many of us, it is unimaginable how bullying and racism can influence and change the lives of young people (mental health and growth potential). This is the story of Jonas (his real name has been changed for personal protection).

Jonas attends school in the Netherlands. He is a teenager of bi-cultural background, dark skinned and tall for his age. Three weeks after arriving in the Netherlands, he is told by a classmate "you are big and black, you don't belong here". This incident was immediately brought to the attention of his teacher, to no avail. Surprisingly, a few weeks later, this same teacher said to Jonas: "your Dutch is bad and we think your intelligence level is very low. Your only option is the VMBO and hopefully you will succeed in becoming a handyman. Go and fix your backlogs somewhere else".

After primary school, Jonas did indeed end up at VMBO. Since Jonas showed his talents as an athlete at a very young age, his mother made an effort to try and enrol him in a combined academic and sports program. Unfortunately, in the first week at the new school, Jonas' bag with its contents (laptop, books) was stolen. Jonas' mother went to school to discuss the matter and the bag was returned. However, their reaction was: 'Jonas has his head in the clouds, he should pay more attention to his belongings'.

Jonas again becomes a victim of bullying and racism. This time he was regularly threatened by fellow students and often challenged to fight. The majority of teachers stood by and did nothing. Except for two staff members who used to hide Jonas in their class rooms during breaks. When these two teachers eventually left the school, Jonas used to hide in the toilets. Jonas is beaten up but he does not have the courage to press charges. Jonas' mother wrote several letters to the school that remained unanswered until one of Jonas' sports coaches intervenes and forces a conversation with the coordinator at school. However, by then it is already too late for Jonas. He has been literally and figuratively destroyed, humiliated and Jonas no longer desires to live.

As a group of friends we are working with Jonas and his mother on an urgent plan to build a new life for him in a safe environment with coaching and supervision, free from violence, where he can build up his self esteem, image and develop his talents.

Stichting Schenk een Kans (in oprichting) in Nederland steunt en onderschrijft de JONAS CAMPAGNE.

Voor velen van ons is het onvoorstelbaar hoe pesten en racisme het leven van jongeren kunnen beïnvloeden en veranderen (geestelijke gezondheid en groeipotentieel). Dit is het verhaal van Jonas (zijn echte naam is gefingeerd uit persoonlijke bescherming).

Jonas gaat naar school in Nederland. Hij is een tiener met een biculturele achtergrond, een donkere huid en lang voor zijn leeftijd. Drie weken na aankomst in Nederland krijgt hij van een klasgenoot te horen: "Je bent groot en zwart, je hoort hier niet thuis". Dit incident werd onmiddellijk onder de aandacht van zijn leraar gebracht, maar zonder resultaat. Verrassend genoeg zei diezelfde leraar een paar weken later tegen Jonas: "Je Nederlands is slecht en we denken dat je intelligentieniveau erg laag is. Je enige optie is het vmbo en hopelijk slaag je erin om klusjesman te worden. Ga je achterstanden ergens anders inhalen."

Na de basisschool belandde Jonas inderdaad op het vmbo. Omdat Jonas al op zeer jonge leeftijd zijn talenten als atleet toonde, deed zijn moeder een poging hem in te schrijven voor een gecombineerd academisch en sportprogramma. Helaas werd Jonas' tas met inhoud (laptop, boeken) in de eerste week op de nieuwe school gestolen. Jonas' moeder ging naar school om de kwestie te bespreken en de tas werd teruggegeven. Hun reactie was echter: 'Jonas loopt met zijn hoofd in de wolken, hij moet beter op zijn spullen letten'.

Jonas wordt opnieuw slachtoffer van pesten en racisme. Dit keer werd hij regelmatig bedreigd door medeleerlingen en vaak uitgedaagd om te vechten. De meeste leraren keken toe en deden niets. Behalve twee personeelsleden die Jonas tijdens de pauzes in hun klaslokalen verstopten. Toen deze twee leraren uiteindelijk de school verlieten, verstopte Jonas zich op de toiletten. Jonas wordt in elkaar geslagen, maar hij durft geen aangifte te doen. Jonas' moeder schreef verschillende brieven aan de school, die onbeantwoord bleven totdat een van Jonas' sportcoaches ingreep en een gesprek met de coördinator op school dwong. Maar dan is het voor Jonas al te laat. Hij is letterlijk en figuurlijk kapotgemaakt, vernederd en Jonas wil niet meer leven.

Als vriendengroep werken we samen met Jonas en zijn moeder aan een urgent plan om een nieuw leven voor hem op te bouwen in een veilige omgeving met coaching en begeleiding, vrij van geweld, waar hij zijn zelfvertrouwen en imago kan opbouwen en zijn talenten kan ontwikkelen.
