ABOUT US
The Gitonga Wandai 'Beyond Everest' Project is a not-for-profit initiative seeking to inspire a generation in Kenya to follow their dreams, explore the outdoors, and protect the environment.
BUILDING A LEGACY
Our mission is to build a lasting legacy: one that follows in the footsteps of Wangari Maathai to fight the impact of climate change in Kenya and give more children the opportunity to fall in love with and explore the outdoors.
The Beyond Everest project will fund and organise multiple initiatives - all of them in partnership with Kenyan or African-related enterprises doing incredible work that promote sustainability, the outdoors, or educational causes. These initiatives include:
1) Planting 10,000 trees in areas impacted by deforestation in Kenya in partnership with the Miti Alliance
2) Funding a mentorship programme for deaf children at Lugha Ishara school
3) Establishing a young hikers and rock climbing programme in partnership with Mountain Club Kenya
4) Funding the world's first ever net zero-carbon Everest expedition; that of Kenyan hiker and sustainability advocate Gitonga Wandai, whose mission is create a lasting legacy. Gitonga's story-to-date was captured in the award-winning film Gitonga (2020), which aired at Banff Mountain Film Festival 2020 and aired to 1.4m Kenyans in May 2020: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOmhHbLMejQ
OUTCOMES
1) Over 10,000 trees planted in Kenyan forests by 2027 - these trees will protect against the impacts of climate change including flooding & drought.
2) Thousands of Kenyan schoolchildren & communities taking an active role in fighting climate change - and inspired to protect their local environments.
3) Thousands of schoolchildren given the opportunity to gain a connection with the outdoors, and discover and live their dreams.
