This morning my parents discovered that our sweet 5 year old German shepherd “Girty” suddenly could not stand on her own, that her hind legs were no longer functioning and that she was unable to stand on her own/feel sensation at all in her back leg area. My mom took her to the emergency vet in Akron following suggestions from local vet clinics where they discovered that Girty is infected with Lymes disease which could be causing the nerve and sensation issues based off of bloodwork.
The next steps are now MRI scanning to see if the loss of feeling and loss of use altogether is caused by something other than the Lymes disease or if it is something else such as a tumor/cyst etc. along the spine and then from there deciding if surgery is necessary.
Currently Girty is unable to even use the bathroom without someone physically aiding the process of relieving herself and it is absolutely heartbreaking to see and for me to watch my parents go through. Anyone that has pets hopefully understands that it is hard to not take it to the fullest extent of care and procedures before deciding any life altering decisions for their animals and that it is also extremely expensive for any vet procedure so please understand that ANY amount that is able to be donated to my family for Girty would mean the world to my parents, myself and anyone that has ever witnessed the bond my mother has with this sweet dog.
We are not ones to ask for donations at all especially when there may be others who have it worse in this world, right now - however, we are not ready to say goodbye or give up on her and would be so eternally grateful for any kind soul able to donate or even take a moment to send positive thoughts and prayers to my mom, my dad and our sweet Girty girl
