Hello hello! I am in my first year of teaching as a Resource Specialist Teacher at Windmill Springs, a public school serving grades TK-8 in Southeast San Jose, California. The students at my school are full of creativity, compassion, and energy and it has been a joy working with them so far this year.
Working in a TK-8 school reminds me of my own experiences growing up. As a kid, I had ADHD and anxiety. With that came a LOT of energy that I needed to burn off. Fortunately, I always had outlets available to me. Starting in elementary school, I joined the Girls on the Run team at my school. Twice a week I was able to run around with other girls who were led by excited, passionate, trained coaches and not only release some of my energy and anxiety, but learn about myself, my strengths, and build a community. Not only does Girls on the Run focus on shaping healthy, happy kids, it also encourages positive social, emotional, and mental development.
At Windmill Springs, there are limited opportunities for girls in grades 3-5 to move after school. This spring I am starting a Girls on the Run chapter. It will run for 10 weeks from March-May with practice 2 times per week leading up to a 5k run. Our team will be made up of 15 girls in grades 3-5 which is the maximum number that can be on a team. In order for them to register, they need to pay a $220 fee. For many of the girls, this payment is significant. More than 60% of the students at my school are from low-income families. My hope is that, working together, we can help ease this burden.
My goal is to raise enough funds for each girl to be paid for in full in order to enjoy the benefits of this program without causing stress on their families. In order to do this, we will need to raise $3,300. This fee covers the cost of curriculum and lesson materials; training for GOTR volunteer coaches; official program t-shirt and water bottle; 5K registration fee, personalized race bib, and finisher’s medal; and a post-5K celebration.
Any amount that you can donate will make a difference. Thank you for being part of this effort! I look forward to sharing updates with you as we kick off the program!
