Girls DJ Too: Summertime Spinning (2024)

Hi, my name is Kaykay47, and I am the People's DJ from The Bronx who boldly creates passion and joy through rhythm and Movement.

I am raising money for our 3rd year of Girls DJ Too: Summertime Spinning! Special thank you to those who donated and supported the vision last year!

For those of you who are new to the Girls DJ Too Initiative:

“Girls DJ Too: Summertime Spinning” is a 1-week Intensive project aiming to provide girls in The Bronx with access to hone their DJ skills like scratching, blending, & creating their DJ mix. In addition to learning new skills, students will learn the history of DJing as one of the significant pillars of hip hop and financial literacy as a DJ! Most importantly, students will have fun, build confidence, and make new friends!

This year, the program will be held in August 2024. Each DJ class session will be about 3 hours per day. On the last Day, students will demonstrate what they’ve learned throughout the program.

In addition to teaching the DJ skills, there will also be an education component in which participants will learn the history behind the skills and Hip Hop culture since The Bronx is Hip Hop’s birthplace. We will also discuss the connection of Hip Hop history to today’s society and how Hip Hop can be a tool of resilience and resistance.

It’s important to show young girls and society that DJing is not just a male-dominating art but also that girls and women can be DJs. It’s also important to mention that DJ classes rarely happen in The Bronx because of the expensive courses and equipment.

I’ve also realized that my DJ mentors are primarily men who aren’t from The Bronx. When I DJ at events, I am often reminded that a “Female DJ” is shocking for people to know and hear about, especially in The Bronx community. I am also aware that there aren’t that many of us “Female DJs” from The Bronx, and with this project, one of the main goals is for the number of Female DJs to grow. I envision a world where young women of color can thrive in the arts and face no judgment in male-dominated spaces.

Some may question the validity of a DJ being an Artist. Well, the role of art is for folks to express themselves creatively. DJing promotes creativity and expression. From the music choices to the transitions from one song to the next, DJing allows for space of authenticity and a dialogue between the person on the 1s and 2s and their audience. DJs aren't just pressing buttons; they create beat patterns, sound effects, Acapella Mixes, scratching, and more. When you think of painting, the canvas will show the end product. For DJing, the canvas is the needed equipment such as turntables, headphones, laptops, needles, and more. The final product is the performance.

Summer 2022 was the launch of the “Girls DJ Too: Summertime Spinning” program. Right now, the program is open specifically to femmes, girls, and women-identified folks (non-binary and trans folks are also encouraged to join the classes) in The Bronx and other uptown areas in NYC.

Funding will cover the following:
  • Equipment expenses (Speakers, plugs, Serato subscriptions, etc.)
  • Compensation for staff (Myself as the Program Director/Facilitator, Co-Billingual DJ instructor, Administrative Assistant, and Social Media Coordinator).
  • Refreshments for nourishment ( food/snacks and beverages)

Special thanks to the Bronx Council on the Arts for providing us with the Arts Fund grant that helped with the following expenses so far:
  • Pioneer DJM-S5 Mixer
  • Turntables
  • Needles
  • Serato Control Vinyl
  • and more...
