SUPPORTING THE RESPONSE TO TROPICAL CYCLONE IDAI IN ZIMBABWE
On March 17, 2019 Cyclone Idai hit the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe causing massive destruction of homes and local facilities, loss of lives, and displacement of thousands of inhabitants. Typically disasters that occur in rural areas affect women, girls, and children the most. We expect this disaster to be no different. Rescue operations have been slow resulting in women and children being stranded or confined in their homes due to inabilities to swim or reach mainlands. As the official death toll continues to rise, the trail of destruction has left thousands in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe stranded and in need of basic necessities. Help has come from all over the world in providing food and clothing. In many efforts to help the victims of Cyclone Idai, Girl child Outreach discovered that panties and sanitary pads are the most under-donated and most needed items of clothing for girls and women. Girl child Outreach is focusing on the “Panties and Sanitary Pads” drive to restore dignity for these affected women and girls.
