Support Gino Parks: Motown Legend in Need
Donation protected
Gene Purifoy, known to enthusiasts of 1950s-60s rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues as the legendary Gino Parks, is in urgent need of support as he faces serious health challenges and mounting medical expenses.
Originally from Fairfield, Alabama, Gino moved to Detroit in the mid-1950s and quickly found notoriety singing in nightclubs like the 20 Grand, Phelp's Lounge, Lee's Club Sensation, and the Rage Show Bar. He began working as a duo live and on recordings with Andre Williams, and soon cut his own single for Fortune Records in 1957. A few years later, Gino was one of Berry Gordy's first signings for Tamla/Motown, where he recorded several amazing R&B sides before the company transitioned to the more polished sound it became famous for. Today, Gino's 45 rpm singles are highly respected and sought-after by fans and collectors.
Now, at 92-years-old, Gino requires long-term nursing home care, a cost that has become overwhelming for his family. His daughters, Gena Long and LaTreasie James, are doing everything they can to support him, but the expenses are outpacing their means. After corresponding with Gena this week, ahead of her father's birthday, I learned of his decline and felt compelled, as a longtime fan of his records, to help ease the hardship by creating this campaign.
This fundraiser is a way for those who love Gino, his songs, and his undeniable contribution to American music, to give back and help ensure he receives the care and dignity he deserves in this late stage of life. Every contribution will go directly toward Gino's nursing home expenses and related care. If you've ever been moved by Gino Parks' voice like I have, please consider showing your support now. Any amount, no matter how small, makes a difference.
