My dear friend, Gina Hussein, is still in Khan Yunis. Ninety percent of her neighborhood has already fled.
The IDF declared it a “dangerous combat zone” and drones have started flying overhead announcing their approach. Once they reach her street, she’ll have to run. She already has her things packed in boxes and wrapped in linens.
She’ll be carrying five cats. But she has no tent. Nothing to shield herself or her animals from the weather or from the eyes in the sky.
Tents that used to cost $200 are now $1,500. The four-month blockade has made survival impossible for most people. For context, a single cherry tomato now goes for $8. Even if you have the money, supplies are running out. And to make matters worse, there are no functioning banks or ATMs in Gaza. To get money to her, we have to use trusted exchangers who charge a fee just so Gina can collect the funds.
We’re trying to raise $2,500. That will get her a tent, cover the cost of transferring the funds (exchangers charge 30% of the fund total), and give her a little extra for emergency supplies.
My name is Rebecca King and I run Wild Country Farm Sanctuary in central Texas.
I met Gina 7 months ago (November 2024) when she was looking for help feeding her cats.
The price of cat food had skyrocketed and sometimes it wasn’t even available at all. She needed 400 cans of food each month to help the homeless cats in her neighborhood, while under siege. She was struggling. Given that I also help animals in need, and know how difficult it is to feed a large number of animals even under the best circumstances, we immediately connected. Gina is quite possibly the most selfless person I know. She makes sure her cats eat before she does. They are her family. Her children. And just like we wouldn’t leave our animals behind in a disaster, no one should be expected to.
I’ve just been trying to support Gina in whatever small ways I can as she fights to keep herself and her cats alive. That’s what this is. Life and death. It’s not about comfort. It’s about dignity and survival. It’s about staying together.
Everyone has inherent value. But people who keep giving while everything is being taken from them shouldn’t have to do it alone. They need help too. Especially now.
Please donate or share. The situation is urgent. The military is approaching her home and the funds will take days to reach her. We don’t have time.
