The country of India has the most orphans in the world, totaling over 20 million.
For the past three years my wife has felt led to adopt internationally whereas I have been hesitant for a number of reasons.
Eugene Peterson wrote, "There is an enormous gap between what we think we can do and what God calls us to do. Our ideas of what we can do or want to do are trivial; God's ideas for us are grand. ... The excuses we make are plausible; often they are statements of fact, but they are excuses all the same and disallowed by our Lord."
Yes, I have a list in my head of several plausible reasons not to pursue adoption. Each of my reasons may be statements of fact, but they are excuses all the same. As I have been studying Abraham's life recently in Genesis, I was forced to ask myself: "Will I live in excuses driven by fear, or will I live in faith that drives out fear?"
So, with my family, I have decided to surrender this to Christ and to step out in faith. In doing so, my wife and I recently had conversations with a few adoption agencies.
In God's sovereignty, the representative from Lifeline in Birmingham, AL - the second agency we contacted - turned out to be a former student of mine from Westminster Christian Academy in Saint Louis, MO. Neither Brooke nor I knew to whom Lifeline was connecting us. When we began the conversation, however, the young lady asked if I had taught at WCA and then told us who she was (now married, her last name is different). Brooke looked at me and mouthed, "This is a God thing."
We have thus officially applied to pursue adoption in the country of India. Brooke's brother and his wife adopted twins from India five years ago, and we love the idea of the little girl for whom we seek to provide a forever home already having cousins from the same country.
Since we believe the Lord is calling our family to this endeavor, we are choosing to trust God in this grand undertaking. Family and friends, will you pursue this process with us?
The total cost for adopting through the country of India is a little over $35,000. That seems like a daunting number, but if 30 people decided to donate $1,000 or 300 people just gave $100, the amount that we need to help us in this adoption journey would be reached.
The process requires different payment amounts along the way. We were able to pay for step one, but we know that we will need financial assistance in each of the steps that now follow.
I pray you realize that your generosity would not only mean the world to Brooke, Whitman, Chamblin, and me, but it would make a world of difference for one little orphaned girl from India. Thank you for considering being a part of our adoption story.
