Patricia Landivar, a single mother of 3, was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer 4 years ago. A fighter, she underwent many rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries, in order to spend as much time with her children as she could. In April 2015 Patricia had to stop working, but unfortunately she lost her battle with cancer in November.
Patricia’s oldest son, Guillermo, is an Air Force Veteran who served in Iraq. He was granted an honorable discharge so he could go care for his father after back surgery, as there was no one else to care for him. His parents divorced many years prior to the cancer diagnosis, and his father also passed away many years ago.
Her second oldest son, Hernando, was born with Cerebral Palsy, and requires constant care 24/7. When she was healthy, Patricia was Hernando's primary caregiver along with a part time nurse. Due to the medical and living costs brought on by the cancer and Hernando’s care, many things we take for granted went unnoticed and are in need of repair. Hernando has a specially outfitted van that requires major work, e.g. a ramp that has a motor beyond repair, which is required to operate the lift. The van needs updating and a new ramp to facilitate Hernando’s transportation. The van is a 2005 Toyota Sienna with 125,000 miles on it. We are unsure if the van is past the point of being repaired. We would hope that maybe someone might have a van that they are no longer using that could be outfitted for Hernando to use. The realization that Hernando will need a van able to last him for years is more apparent than ever and the van he has now is short lived.
Patricia’s youngest and only daughter, Gia, was her primary caregiver at home. With some help from Guillermo, they provided care for Patricia while at home. Gia had just graduated from college and was going to start her career in Chicago. With the turn of events in April of this year Gia stayed home to be with her mother. Gia has taken on the responsibility of the family obligations now.
The townhouse where they live is in desperate need of major repairs. The property would not sell in its current condition as the roof has major leaks. One of the bathrooms has a leak that went into the wall and adjoining room. Due to the enormous medical expenses between Patricia and Hernando’s care, their savings have been depleted. Their desire at this point is to somehow upgrade the townhouse and make it suitable to sell.
Our wishful desire is to raise the necessary funds to cover medical costs, repair Hernando’s van and repair the townhouse. This is more than a 24-year-old woman should have to endure, but with God’s grace and your contributions Gia knows they will overcome. The family gratefully appreciates your consideration.
