Gia Tirevold’s Heart Story

Hello, my name is Danielle, and this fundraiser is to help with medical bills for my daughter Gia Tirevold. She was admitted on 8/30 for cardiac arrest while sliding into 3rd base in a softball game. We suspect that she went into ventricular tachycardia and then went pulseless. She received CPR from me for 10 minutes until EMS arrived with an AED. The AED was applied, the LUCAS compression machine was applied and continued CPR, she was able to get a dose of epinephrine through an IO, an airway, and 1 shock from the defibrillator. She was transported to Ridges Hospital in Burnsville where she was stabilized, and then she was transferred to the U of M Masonic Children’s Hospital. There she was admitted to the PICU. Once her labs and symptoms returned to normal after the trauma of CPR, physicians advised an S-ICD be placed in order to keep her safe and continue sports. She has undergone multiple lab draws, EKG, echocardiogram, CT angiogram, cardiac MRI, and genetic testing. The plan is to have surgery under general anesthesia for the placement of her new S-ICD that will deliver a shock to her if needed. Once she receives the surgery, she will have to pass a stress test in order to return to sports. She will be able to play as long as we protect the device and it doesn’t break on impact from something. We will need to customize some sort of protective vest for her because this girl lives to be on a ball field!
