GI Jack is Fighting Back!
A man, a son, a soldier, a fighter, a hero, a veteran, a husband, a father, a friend, and now...veteran in serious need of help.
As a proud American soldier who fought in Desert Storm, Jack Leyrer dug a foxhole, had one canteen of water, very little food and spent 72 hours awake, under straight gunfire fending off the enemy. He stayed alive and fought for his country!
Jack is honored to have served his country. He performed 20 years Active Duty and worked 10 years for the Department of Defense. He fought in Desert Storm and in Bosnia, was on the Freedom Team, received the Bronze Star from President Bush, received the NATO metal and put his life on the line for his fellow Americans. He also suffers from PTSD. Jack is a giving person and needs your help. It’s our turn to step up and show Jack that his life and fighting for his country was not in vain. Jack is married to Mari and they have one son, Kyle.

Jack is currently living in a nightmare that he can’t seem to wake up from. He has suffered three strokes: Stroke # 1 Valentine's Day 2014, Stroke #2 Thanksgiving 2018 and Stroke #3 Christmas 2018. Thanksgiving and Christmas 2018, Jack had strokes that disabled his ability to function.
When Jack had his stroke at Thanksgiving, he landed in Covenant Hospital. The stroke affected him in a way that when he ate or drank he choked. He needed rehab. Because of the type of health insurance he has and the high co-pay, the rehab place couldn’t take him so they sent him home with a visiting nurse. He couldn’t be evaluated at the VA Hospital for two weeks. With the assistance of a Senator Dan Kildee’s representative and Saginaw County Commissioner Chuck Stack (also a Veteran), Jack was able to get in to be evaluated faster. Within 10 minutes of his evaluation they knew he needed to be admitted. The VA admitted him.
Mari and Kyle brought Jack home for two days for Christmas where they enjoyed family traditions including Kyle reading The Christmas Story. Upon returning Jack to the VA, he had a stroke and was immediately taken to Covenant Hospital.

Tests were performed and no blood was detected on the brain. Jack had surgery to repair a hole in his heart. When Jack came out of surgery he was far worse than when he went in. He couldn’t move his left side, couldn’t speak or walk plus he was not dealing well mentally. The next day they performed another surgery to insert a feeding tube.
Jack was not getting better and Covenant was going to send him back to the VA. With help and many phone calls, HealthSource seen that this Veteran needed rehab and agreed to admit him. Now that Jack is at HealthSource he is improving. He has a long road ahead of him. Jack loves the staff and is getting good care. Jack successfully took his first steps the other day! THIS SOLDIER NEVER QUITS!
Jack knows what he’s going thru is hard on his family and he wants to get better so he can take care of them instead of the other way around. He has NOT given up. The struggle is real. Jack’s family and friends are not giving up on him. Mari has sought help thru every agency she has been told to call and has been turned down with each one. No one is willing to help this Veteran and his family. Mari has cancelled cable, her land-line phone, and is trying to survive on the mere basics but is scraping the bottom of the barrel and the barrel is about to be busted up to burn for heat.

Continued help with their Consumers Energy bill. The shut off notice was paid by many donations last week. Consumers threatened to shut off their heat and electricity.
Gas so Mari and Kyle can visit Jack everyday. Their support is extremely important in Jack’s healing.
