Support Mangal for Great Himalaya Trails on Wheels

This is a crowdfunding campaign run by Prem Bahadur Gurung for GHT on Wheels on behalf of Mangal Lama. Read below for details.

About Mangal Lama and GHT on Wheels

Figure: Bike and backpack Mangal is carrying on his journey. The bike and attached bags weigh about 25 kg, while the backpack weighs about 15 kg, totaling to about 40 kg that Mangal has to carry on un-ridable sections of the GHT high route.  We are grateful to Scott Bikes Nepal for providing the bike and our other partners for providing filming, biking and camping equipment.

GHT on Wheels challenge is a world record attempt for the first ever solo mountain biking expedition on the upper route of the Great Himalaya Trail (GHT), a network of roughly 1700 km of trails through the Himalayas from East to West in Nepal. GHT is the banner that covers the entire Nepali Himalayas: the majestic Kanchenjunga region, popular trekking areas of Everest and Annapurna, and awe inspiring and yet relatively untouched trails of Humla and Darchula in the West.

Figure: Mangal on his journey to Kanchenjunga Base Camp (5160 m) from where he will officially start the GHT on Wheels challenge on April 1.

The world record attempt will be done by Mangal Lama, Nepalese international mountain bike champion, and title holder of 10 national and international competitions over the course of his 10 year career. The attempt will be along the 1700km trail over the course of 70 days, crossing 22 passes above 5500m. With an uphill battle of 1,700m elevation gain per day and cycling a total of 25km per day, by the end Mangal would have a reached a total elevation gain of over 88,000m. This attempt is a true test of human endurance and preservation in one of the harshest climates in the world.

Mangal is already on his journey and will officially attempt GHT on Wheels starting at Kanchenjunga Base Camp on April 1, 2022. Follow Mangal's journey live at

Why GoFundMe?

We are using the GoFundMe platform to help Mangal cover part of the project costs (see details below) by engaging with an audience worldwide. This campaign enables supporters who are able to donate online to directly contribute to GHT on Wheels and its mission.

Budget and Expense Summary

Figure: The total estimated cost for this project is about AUD 112,700. About 90% of the costs include equipment, insurance and bike-riding/travel costs (including food supplies) during Mangal's ride. So far 69% of the total cost has been raised through direct financial support (of about Rs. 5 lakhs), donations of equipment, and in-kind support by partners for insurance and evacuation costs. This campaign on GoFundMe will contribute to the remaining 21% of the total costs.

Figure: Distribution of how the money raised on GoFundMe will be raised. The target amount (AUD 35,000) for fundraising on GoFundMe will cover the costs for food and lodging (where camping is not necessary), guides (for technical mountain passes that Mangal will help navigating), and miscellaneous costs during Mangal's ride. About 22% of the total target amount will be used for marketing, events, communication, and program management.

Thank you for your time and support.
