Family,
In a few short weeks, Ghost Notes will finally be ready to be released to the world. I left my whole life behind last year to put all of myself into bringing this Grey Smith project to life. In a few short months, I have witnessed incredible music and an incredible team come forward. I have spent countless hours obsessing over the smallest details, slept in multiple studios and in my car on some nights. I wrote and recorded this record all over the place. Ghost Notes started in a shitty warehouse in West Baltimore. I moved all of my belongings into a room in a larger space and got to work. A few months into that process, I showed up to learn that the DEA had crashed in the doors and raided my space looking for someone that ran into the building. My partner Brion and I broke into the space in the same night and stole all of my equipment back.
Things got tricky.
My gear sat unplugged and collecting dust for months. I wrote most of this project with my daughter asleep in the back of the car on the side of the road in a research farm in Beltsville. My awesome label would put me up in hotels some weekends so i could work. I would frequently receive noise complaints and eventually resorted to recording the vocals for one of the songs on this record in a makeshift vocal booth in a hotel conference room. The final song was recorded in Hawaii when my good friend Sarah decided that I needed to finish this project off somewhere special and was kind enough to fly me out.
I wanted to quit so many times.
The shock of leaving a career, a home, and a marriage to chase this music thing was overwhelming. I was still in college as I had been for the past 6 years, taking 16 credits simultaneously between home and driving to Lincoln University in Philly every weekend. I constantly had to endure the familiar voice in my head telling me that I was an untalented idiot who was delusional enough to think that the music was good enough to bet my life on and was about to learn the hard way that he was mistaken. I worked in the face of that fear for a month straight. I put out a demo of one song and someone who would become one of my best friends stepped up on sheer faith and created a record label solely for the purpose of pushing the Grey Smith idea forward.
I have leaned on you all so many times. You've given me your time, your feedback, your relentless encouragement, money, couches, and even offered me your own homes to setup my equipment in and finish the record. You've told me to keep pushing, and you've told me to shut the hell up and focus in the moments where I had been up 40 hours straight trying to write and lost touch with reality. My team has talked me off of so many ledges during this process when I freak out over the smallest detail in a song.
It worked.
We're here now.
Ghost Notes is done.
We're finishing up the mixing and mastering phase and preparing for release. While my label has spent a huge amount of money so far on production, logistics, mixing, recording, food, gas, diapers, videos, and a host of other things, we've gone way over budget and I don't want to ask any more of them. I'm turning to you all one last time to give whatever you can to get us over the finish line.
The outstanding costs are spread among final production costs, printing merchandise, cds, vinyl, and most of all soundproofing and setting up my new recording space and shooting more videos for the record to have the correct impact when it hits stores.
I truly believe that we've made some of the best music on the world. When I say "I couldn't have done this without you", I'm not saying that lightly. We've raised Ghost Notes as village and this has been such an awesome journey so far.
On behalf of myself, Ramona, 11th Hour Music, Jeff, Brion, Chris, Jay, Phoebe, and all the rest of #TeamGhostNotes, thank you.
