A Leg For Betty

Donation protected
I am starting a go fund me campaign for my Friend Betty.
She recently had her right leg amputated after a medical complication. The prosthetic leg is not entirely covered by OHIP and she needs $ 5200 to receive a new leg and begin her road to recovery. Betty’s medical journey has not been easy; read her full story below. Thank you for your support.

In October 2017, Betty had an artificial vein grafted in her right leg to improve her circulation. Eight months later, her first blood clot formed in the graft; at that time the doctors were able to remove the clot. Unfortunately, in October 2018 a second larger clot formed in the graft. The doctors were unable to remove this clot and Betty had a second surgery to transplant a vein from her arm into her leg.  Very quickly the doctors knew the pressure on this new graft was not good. Betty was in hospital for 2 weeks with an open leg wound and she had procedures daily to try to save her leg. In early December 2018 Betty's new graft exploded while she slept and she nearly bled to death in her hospital bed. After receiving 5 units of blood the doctors were able to stop the bleeding and stabilize the wound.  That evening Betty learned the doctors would amputate her right leg below the knee to save her life.

Unfortunately, her amputation wound got severely infected and the wound would not heal. So, 10 day after her first amputation Betty underwent her 5th surgery in 5 weeks to further amputate her leg above the knee.  After nearly 8 weeks in hospital, Betty returned home to start on the road to recovery and a new way of life.

Last week Betty was sent to Parkwood hospital to be fitted for a prosthetic leg. She will remain at park wood for up to 8 weeks and will have 2 temporary prosthetics before getting her permanent prosthetic.

The cost of this medical device is not entirely covered by OHIP or the war amps. Betty's new leg will cost an estimated $ 12000 of which Betty will pay $ 5200.  Both Betty and her husband Kaz lost their job's in September 2018 and Betty will not be able to return to work for at least 1 year.

A new leg for Betty is absolutely necessary for her to regain some form of independence and it is only one of the expensive medical devises she needs: a wheelchair, bath chair, and retrofitting her car so she can possibly drive again are just a few of the other costs she must also endure because of this tragic medical complication.

Let's all pitch in with donations to help Betty regain her freedom. All donations are greatly appreciated.
