Leo’s story: Driving home the evening of August 13th, my husband and I saw a single boxer sitting in front of a bean field on a very busy state route. We stopped as soon as we were able, turned around and went back to assist him. Soon after exiting the car, it became clear, he was very injured. Barely able to walk but also very scared, he did all he could to “run” away. Knowing the dangers of the road we were able to let him move at his own pace safely away from the road and into a backyard. We gained permission from the homeowner to check the backyard and found him tucked and trying to hide. Offering some leftovers we had with us, we were able to slip lead him and get him into our car. Clearly emaciated and broken, he was now safe, and we headed for home. Right away we got to see the soul behind the sad eyes and pain. Leo, as he is now named, is incredibly sweet, loving, and devoted to living no matter what the odds. We got him to the vet right away where we learned the following:
Leo is approximately 2 years old, no older than 3. We believe he was hit by a car approximately 4 weeks ago, resulting in critical fractures in both hind legs as you can see in the x-rays. He is emaciated due to starvation as his vitals and blood work show no signs of viruses, or disease. His body and mind have been fighting a battle to heal and survive, but his fractures are too severe to heal properly on their own. Leo needs surgery to rebuild his legs, giving him the chance at a normal happy life he so much deserves. This was not an expense our family was prepared for, but are determined to make happen for Leo, so we are asking for help. Our current verbal estimate is $3000 - 4500 for one surgery to fix both legs at the same time. We are fundraising for $5000 to cover the surgery and vet care already provided. As soon as we have the written estimate I will share as a matter of transparency and record.
