Help Attacked Journalist in Uganda

Donation protected

A week ago, InfoNile’s investigative journalist and filmmaker Megan S. Lee was attacked by a robber in her house in Kampala, Uganda in the middle of the night.

“Be quiet. I'll f**king kill you," the robber said as he ransacked her room.

“In my barely awakened state, I fall into immediate panic. I can't believe it. I'm absolutely in horror for what is to come. My mind is going off the rails. Does he have a gun? I could be shot dead right here…” Megan recounts.

By the time the attack was over, Megan had been hit on her chin by the robber, who got away with all of her equipment, which includes:

  • MacBook Pro 16-inch $2500 USD
  • iPhone 12 128GB $1100 USD
  • iPhone X $500 USD
  • Samsung SSD 1 TB $80 USD
  • External hard drive 8 TB $150 USD
  • Sony A6300 camera $700 USD
  • $1500 USD cash

At InfoNile we work with more than 500 investigative and environmental journalists like Megan to tell stories on key issues surrounding the Nile River in 11 African countries.

Megan’s work over the past year includes an expose on a sugar company in Uganda that was cutting down trees in order to plant sugarcane. Her work helped bring the attention of policymakers who have since set up measures to protect Bugoma Forest in Uganda. She has also produced a documentary on Uganda’s First Oil , highlighting the potential effects drilling oil will have on the fragile ecosystem of the Lake Albert Region, Uganda. She spent a month traversing storms and bailing out leaks to capture the story of the Flipflopi , a boat made out of recycled plastic that sailed around Lake Victoria to draw attention to the issue of single-use plastic.

InfoNile relies on donor funds to grant our journalists to tell key stories aimed at protecting the environment.

While Megan continues to recover from the physical and emotional trauma this has caused, InfoNile is appealing for donations to help her buy new equipment to continue telling stories to fight against environmental injustice.

Help us help Megan. Help us continue to report on the Nile River through data-based multimedia journalism.
